"Peace Mom" v. "Guardian of Power" - by Stephen Lendman

Credit both titles to the book authors. Cindy Sheehan as a mother, peace activist, and now candidate to succeed Nancy Pelosi in California's Eighth Congressional District. Pelosi as both "guardian" and possessor of what Davids Cromwell and Edwards wrote about in their powerful critique of the media.

Both women represent hugely different interests, so let readers choose which ones they prefer. First some background on both candidates.

Sheehan is a peace activist, not a politician, and think how refreshing that is. Here's some background about her from her cindyforcongress.com web site:

-- born in California to working-class parents who experienced the pain of the Great Depression;

-- raised four children, including her son Casey; killed in Iraq on April 4, 2004 at age 24 - five days after he arrived;

-- Sheehan bitterly opposed the war and begged her son not to re-enlist in August 2003: "I begged Casey not to go. I told him I would take him to Canada. (I would do) anything to get him not to go to that immoral war;"

-- as an adult mother, she attended Cerritos College and UCLA;

-- she then worked as a Youth Minister at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vacaville, CA for eight years and coordinated an after-school program for at-risk middle school children;

-- everything changed when Casey was killed; it energized her to action;

-- she founded Gold Star Families for Peace in January 2005, an organization of family members whose relatives were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and that's dedicated "to ending the occupation in Iraq and bringing our troops home;"

-- in August 2005, she organized demonstrations close to the Bush ranch in Crawford, TX - what became known as "Camp Casey;" it drew thousands of activists and celebrities from around the world in protest against an illegal war they want stopped;

-- prior to her congressional campaign, she travelled the world to meet with world leaders about resolving the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts; the US Congress and governments of South Korea, Scotland and Canada paid her special recognition;

-- numerous organizations around the country and world now have her as a keynote speaker and honored guest;

-- she receives dozens of peace awards and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005; in addition, Dario Fo, 1997 Nobel Laureate for Literature, wrote a play about her called "Peace Mom," the same title as her book;

-- she's also now an accomplished author of three books to go along with her other achievements that have gotten her featured in the mainstream press and alternative media;

-- in sum: major achievements for a once simple "mom" who cared enough to change her life and shake the world; now she hopes to do it as a member of the 111th Congress next January and accomplished the first step toward it - in spite of a determined effort to stop her, she collected enough required signatures (by the August 8 deadline) to be on the November ballot as an independent candidate for Congress.

Nancy Pelosi is the current House Speaker and Democrat Congressional member since winning a special election in 1987. Her 8th Congressional District represents much of San Francisco and is considered one of the most liberal ones in the country. In November 2002, she became the first woman ever in Congress to lead a political party as Minority Leader. After Democrats won control of the House in the 2006 off-year elections, she was elected Speaker in January 2007.

She grew up in Baltimore in a very political family. Her late father, Tommy "The Elder" D'Alesandro, was a local party boss and served in various capacities in the city council, as a state delegate, congressman, and three times as mayor from 1947 - 1959. Her younger brother, Tommy "The Younger" D'Alesandro, also was Baltimore's mayor for one term.

Pelosi's husband, Paul, is a successful San Francisco financier and businessman. Largely because of his wealth, Pelosi is considered the ninth richest person in the House (according to OpenSecrets.org) with estimates of their net worth ranging from $25 million to three or four times that amount and a life-style to go with it. Not a model populist in a strongly Democrat district where she's been re-elected 10 times with at least 75% of the vote. Republicans need not apply, so Democrats win by showing up. At least so far.

On examination, Pelosi's record is troubling, especially after becoming Speaker and failing to deliver on promises made in the 2006 mid-term election. Along with Senate Majority Leader (Democrat) Harry Reid, they share most blame for why the July Rasmussen Reports gave Congress its lowest ever approval rating at 9% with only 2% of respondents calling its performance excellent. The other 7% called it good. The majority 91% called it fair (36%) or poor (52%). That presents opportunity for Sheehan.

Pelosi on the issues explains why. She:

-- supported the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Blily Act that repealed Glass-Steagall and allowed commercial and investment banks and insurance companies to combine; it opened the door for some of the worst financial abuses now apparent;

-- voted for the September 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) for "the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States;" it began the "war on terror," the illegal wars that followed, as well as the Bush administration's coup d'etat against the Constitution and establishment of a police state;

-- opposed the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution responsible for launching the war; but she supported the Afghanistan assault and all illegal war funding;

-- on January 5, 2007 (after becoming Speaker), "informed the president" in writing of her opposition to the "surge;" only supported a non-binding February resolution against it and took no effective action to end it or the occupation;

-- supported the 2007 Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act (HR 2956); it passed the House, but the Senate Foreign Relations Committee took no further action;

-- supported the 2007 US Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health, and Iraq Accountabiity Act (HR 1591) - the first legislation for supplemental Iraq and Afghanistan funding; it called for ending the occupation by September 1, 2008; a compromise bill was agreed to by the House and Senate; it passed both Houses; George Bush vetoed it, and House Democrats failed to override; a second attempt also failed; Democrats in both Houses (backed by Pelosi) agreed to approve supplemental funding with no occupation withdrawal timetable and clear evidence that their earlier efforts were more posturing than a determined effort to end it;

-- despite considerable opposition rhetoric, indicated her support for the Iraq and Afghan wars (on December 5, 2006) after the mid-term elections when she looked assured of being elected Speaker; responding to questions said: "We will not cut off funding for the troops; absolutely not; let me remove all doubt in anyone's mind; as long as our troops are in harm's way, Democrats will be there to support them....;"

-- voted for every Bush administration Pentagon budget request since 2001; and also supported:

-- the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act - a thinly veiled scheme to destroy public education and privatize it;

-- the 2001 Anti-Terrorism Act;

-- the 2001 USA Patriot Act;

-- the 2005 Detainee Treatment Act - it denied detainees habeas rights and let US forces use cruel, abusive, inhumane and degrading treatment in the interest of national security;

-- the 2006 Homeland Security Department Authorization Act;

-- the 2007 Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendation Act;

-- the 2008 and 2009 Intelligence Authorization Acts to fund 13 intelligence agencies; and

-- the 2008 FISA Amendments Act - to weaken standards of proof and warrants required for surveillance and grant telecom companies retroactive immunity for warrantless spying post-9/11.

She's also fully committed to and well-funded by the corporate interests she supports. She voted against withdrawing from the WTO, for NAFTA and for similar "free trade" agreements with Australia, Peru, Chile, and Singapore. She calls democratic Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez a "common thug."

And when it comes to Israel, she states that she and the US "will stand with (the Jewish state) now and forever." She further contends that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict isn't over the issue of occupation. "This is absolute nonsense. In truth, the history of the conflict is not over occupation, and never has been: it is over the fundamental right of Israel to exist."

Her AIPAC June 2008 conference address highlighted her "commitment to Israel's security;" that passage of the 2008 Security Assistance and Arms Export Control Reform Act will expedite sending defense equipment and services to Israel; that Israel will be "treated like NATO members;" and that America will guarantee that "Israel's qualitative military edge (will) be empirically assessed on an ongoing basis."

She also highlighted Iran as one of her main concerns and said: "Ensuring the security of Israel and the entire world demands that we do more to convince Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions and cease its support for terrorist groups." She further suggested that Iran represents an existential threat and that sanctions against it must be tightened - "and by tighten, I mean tighten."

She then added: "Thank you (for) lobby(ing) on behalf of bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressman Ackerman" by which she meant H. Con. Res. 362. It contains outlandish, unsubstantiated accusations against Iran, and if enacted and implemented, will authorize a naval blockade and be an act of war. AIPAC is committed to its passage. Pelosi is committed to AIPAC. Its 2002 - 04 president, Amy Rothschild Friedkin, (a fellow San Franciscan) is her close friend.

Finally, as House Speaker, she declared that efforts to impeach George Bush were "off the table." Most recently in an August 1 interview with James Carney of Time, Inc., she responded to a question about it as follows:

"I took (impeachment) off the table a long time ago. You can't talk about impeachment unless you have the facts, and you can't have the facts unless you have cooperation from the Administration. I think the Republicans would like nothing better than for us to focus on impeachment and take our eye off the ball of a progressive economic agenda."

Pelosi, of course, turns a blind eye to very clear evidence for impeachment. On January 17, 2003, international law expert Professor Francis Boyle listed them in his "Draft Impeachment Resolution Against President George W. Bush" and presented it to the 108th Congress. It called for impeaching the President for high crimes and misdemeanors for:

-- "violat(ing) his constitutional oath to faithfully execute (his) office;"

-- failing to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution;

-- impos(ing) a police state and military dictatorship;

-- ramming the totalitarian USA Patriot Act (and other repressive legislation) through Congress;

-- trying to suspend the constitutional Writ of Habeas Corpus;

-- mass-round(ing) up and incarcrat(ing) foreigners;

-- kangaroo courts;

-- depriving at least two United States citizens of their constitutional rights by means of military incarceration;

-- interfer(ing) with the constitutional right of defendants in criminal cases to (be represented by) lawyers;

-- violating and subverting the Posse Comitatus Act;

-- (allowing) unlawful and unreasonable searches and seizures;

-- violating the First Amendment rights of free exercise of religion, speech, assembly, and to petition the government for redress of grievances;

-- packing the federal judiciary with hand-picked (totalitarian-minded) judges;

-- violating the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions, US War Crimes Act, (UN) Convention against Torture, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights," and other violations of US and international laws and norms - "to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States."

Cindy Sheehan on the Issues

Her positions on key issues stand in stark contrast to Pelosi's. She's for:

-- "repealing all 'free trade' agreements;" replacing them with "fair trade" ones that respect worker rights and union empowerment to bargain on equal terms with management;

-- enacting "single-payer healthcare and affordable housing" legislation;

-- extending unemployment and food stamp benefits at a time of economic distress;

-- "compassionate and humane treatment for immigrant workers;" their right to join unions; and for an "expedited path to legalization in the form of Green Cards;"

-- ending the militarization of the border as well as funding for ICE and other government agencies that "terrorize immigrant workers (driven here by bipartisan support for unfair) 'free trade' and 'structural adjustment' policies;"

-- making quality free education a "basic human right from infants in day care centers to students in universities;"

-- "bring(ing) home our troops from all countries where (they) promote occupation, corporate greed and empire;"

-- repealing the No Child Left Behind Act and backing government-supported public education;

-- investing in the nation's infrastructure, long neglected;

-- slashing the Pentagon's budget and putting federal money into job creation (and social services);

-- reversing destructive deregulation that enables "corporate profiteers to (avoid) proper oversight and health and safety regulations; reinstating Glass-Steagall that separated investment from commercial banking and insurance operations;

-- regulating the corporate media; opposing the "multiple ownership of newspaper, cable, broadcast, internet and all other media operations;" supporting federally-funded "public labor-community broadcast and internet systems;"

-- reversing the trend to "privatize and contract out jobs (that) threat(en the nation's) workforce;" ending the privatization of federal jobs and letting all government workers join unions;

-- preventing the US Postal Service from being privatized;

-- establishing "a national energy system, for a mass transit system;" alternative fuels as well to end our dependence on oil, gas and nuclear;

-- assuring civil rights and privacy protection; ending harassment and discrimination against union members and unorganized workers;

-- repealing the Patriot Act and other repressive laws;

-- ending pervasive spying - by the government on the citizenry and corporations on their workers; and

-- repealing drug and other repressive laws that jail millions of working people in the world's largest prison population.

Sheehan v. Pelosi. "Peace Mom and supporter of people rights v. "Guardian of Power" and defender of wealth and privilege. On November 3, the people of California's 8th Congressional District will decide which agenda they prefer. So can readers.

It is impossible to look at recent US diplomacy without discovering that it is one based more on whim and fancy, than reason.

That's because much of what passes for diplomacy and foreign policy is driven by the market, which is ultimately, the only true bipartisan feature of the nation's politics.

The market buys politicians by the bushel, and when they are slick enough to gain office, they serve corporate interests first, second, and always.

When you think about it, isn't this a perversity of democracy?

In Raj Patel's brilliant new book, Stuffed & Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System (Brooklyn, NY: Melville House Publ., 2008) we find a telling quotation from Robert Strauss, the former head of the Democratic National Committee, describing his relationship with the agricultural business giant, Archer Daniels Midland. Speaking of the company's former chairman, Strauss said, "Dwayne Andreas just owns me. But I mean that in a nice way" (pp.112-13).

If you visited the nation's capital, you'd doubtless find hundreds of men and women who could quite effortlessly replace ADM with Lockheed-Martin, Northrop Grumman, Occidental Petroleum, Exxon Mobil, Halliburton ad infinitum.

And it is precisely on behalf of such interests that foreign policy is made. It's not, and has never been, democracy. It's not freedom. It's none of these things. It's what's good for business.

This may seem a hard truth, but it is the truth.

The Iraq war was a pipe dream of the energy corporations, and opposed by more Americans than almost any war in generations. Who did the politicians listen to -- the people? -- or the corporations?

The impact on US foreign policy and democracy couldn't be more pronounced, as shown by incumbent President Bush's recent visit to the Middle East. America's closest allies essentially gave him the brush-off, and one US-supported leader, Lebanon's Prime Minister, Fuad Saniora, actually told Bush that he didn't have time to rap -- he had another, more important meeting -- with Hezbollah.

Indeed, several weeks later Lebanon's Parliament voted to give more power to Hezbollah.

That's one side-effect of US foreign policy; here's another.

Virtually every elected forum in Pakistan has voted for the impeachment of Pakistan's so-called President (and US ally) Pervez Musharraf, the de facto dictator who locked up his opponents, tossed lawyers in jail, and removed Supreme Court judges who didn't vote his way. Who has America supported - the dictator? -- or the People?

How's this supporting democracy?

Over the border in Afghanistan, the US supports what may be called a narcocracy -- or a narco-state.

The preferred US ally is a military junta (or dictatorship) which oppressed its people with violence and terror. We have nearly a century of examples to prove this all throughout Latin America.

What kind of foreign policy is this but an imperial one? One designed to make millions of enemies, instead of a few isolated 'friends?'

Philly Police Shutdown Urban Garden Project

A future note to community developers: Beware the unfortunate leverage of itinerant street hecklers. Yesterday, two gardeners, transitioning an abandoned, weed-and-garbage lot bordered by a cinder block enclosure between 17^th and 16^th on South Street, had their project cut short only hours after it had begun when a heckler from the neighborhood determined to begin a project of his own.

After demanding a detailed plan for the garden and after being reminded that the gardeners were under no obligation to deliver said vision to him, the pride-sore heckler decided that the situation had been elevated to a public emergency and dialed his cell phone accordingly. He repeated into his receiver and to passers-by his fear that the garden would present an imminent danger to the neighborhood.

It would be simple to close the issue as a mere matter of property and a lack of permission. But there is something in this clean conclusion that reeks of irrational Lockean fundamentalism. That is to say, that the principle of private property, no matter how absurdly, should be placed above all other principles, including community and utility. This theory would position the heckler as social hero and the gardeners as criminals.

If Locke would forgive an alternative view, we may more honestly interpret the occurrence as a triumph for an indifferent law and its blunt weapon teamed with frivolous spite. The Philadelphia police, who would presumably have ignored or even appreciated the effort, were set in opposition by default. And the message, also established by default, was that the removal of the criminal-gardeners was necessary lest our urban wastelands be put, ironically, to good use.

We are well aware that the law empowers abandoned-property-owners – a title that barely survives logic – and an occupied city government with the first and last say in which lots may be restored. The obvious result of such a position is that a slim minority of available lots will be converted and only after a slow navigation through the bureaucratic gauntlet.

Fortunately, the affair was handled more maturely by authorities. Whether their warning never to return precludes other groups from continuing the work-set-in-motion or whether it ensures each a free trial period of cultivation must be left to the discretion of the reader.

Youngest ever British person visits longest serving men in solitary at Angola Prison.

An 11-year-old girl from Chiswick, London has become the youngest ever British person to visit two members of the so-called Angola 3, who remain incarcerated in Angola prison, Louisiana more than three decades after they were convicted of the murder of a prison guard.

Poppy Richards met Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace, found guilty in 1973 and 1974 respectively of the 1972 murder of Brent Miller at the notorious Angola prison. “Meeting Herman and Albert was surreal yet amazing. It was incredible just to sit with them and listen to everything they had to say” She began writing to the two men in 2007 after learning about their cause through her mother, Carrie Reichardt , a 41-year-old artist and activist, aka The Baroness, who has become known for her mosaics infused with social and political commentary that cover the exterior walls of her London home and studio.

In June, she unveiled an extensive work depicting the Angola 3 and Kenny ‘Zulu’ Whitmore – also at Angola and the focus of a new, international campaign mounted by Reichardt and other artists and activists. Carrie said about her daughter’s trip - ‘I feel it is important for me to pass on an awareness of some of these injustices to my daughter. These men have been held in horrible conditions, in tiny cells for years on end, convicted with little or no evidence. They deserve our support, and I’m thrilled my daughter had this fantastic opportunity to visit Angola and our friends Herman and Albert.’

Woodfox and Wallace have always maintained their innocence, claiming they were framed for the crime due to their political activism; both were members of the Black Panther Party and had spoken out about the horrific conditions at the prison.

The third of the Angola 3, Robert King, also a member of the Black Panther Party, was released in 2001, after his conviction for the murder of a fellow inmate at Angola was overturned. He recently visited the UK to raise awareness of the global grassroots movement for the release of Wallace and Woodfox and launch the ‘Free Zulu’ campaign.

Poppy spent four hours on 9th Aug at Angola prison talking with the men, who, until recently spent a minimum of 23 hours a day in their cells. “When I first saw Herman and Albert I ran up to them and gave them a huge hug. It was weird to think that this is a rare treat for them, just to have a hug from another human being”

In March this year, following increased media attention and a visit to the prison by chair of the US House Judiciary Committee John Conyers, Woodfox and Wallace were moved from solitary confinement, after almost 36 years, to a maximum-security dormitory. Campaigners say they are likely to have spent longer in solitary than anyone else in US history, a belief that has prompted Amnesty International to highlight their cause.

The extraordinary 11-year-old, who says she intends to become a human rights lawyer to help abolish the death penalty, also visited New Orleans during her two-week stay in the US, visiting and documenting sites still devastated after Hurricane Katrina.

Google blogger case goes to court

A SMALL Indian construction equipment company is demanding that Google
disclose the name of a person who used its blogging service in a case
that could change the way the internet giant does business in India.

Google's Indian subsidiary, Google India Private Ltd, is being sued
for alleged defamation in Bombay High Court by Mumbai-based Gremach
Infrastructure Equipments and Projects Ltd.
Last September, Gremach bought a 75 per cent stake in 11 coal mining
licences in Mozambique. This year, a blogger using the name Toxic
Writer criticised the company on blogger.com, which allows individuals
to create blogs without publicly revealing their identity.

The original purpose of this article post was to point out that India's
Gremach Infrastructure Equipments & Projects Ltd that is threatening
to sue Google because of an anonymous poster 'using the name 'Toxic
Writer' criticized the company on blogger.com, a site that allows

millkionaires and billionaires caught my attention equally as I tried
to find Toxic Writers' no longer existent blogsite and vollies against
Gremach and its multi national stock manipulating elites.

his business in Lousiana itself !
Be that as it may and given the fact tat U.S. energy addiction and
apparent lack of trained business or corporate managers and engineers
may be cause for these international takeovers in the first place what
is truly unethical are international con artists the governments around
the world allow to defraud both their own and other citizens for the
economic gain of an elite international mafia who bribe those
government leaders with their illicit gains wheteher it be American or
India politicians or other. And while it is going on - whether it be
economic rape such as Gremach has pulled off with its international
capitalisers such as Merrill Lynch or whether it is a U.S. CIA penny
stock fraud or boiler room such as Belladore Group of Kuala Lumpur
that used a Stanford University
'biotech' penny stock fraud called

in Mozambique coal mines that rape that environment and its people -
we should all have the right to cry out anonymously or using oyur own
name at least at the very least until democracy returns to our streets

In truth the internet has come to be a great consumer of energy as its
spews forth both information as well as misinformation and thus in
some ways calls for more sacfifice of the environment and Mozambique
and West Virginia coal,etc.,than ever before. Maybe Google should be
investing or at least looking into energy sources to run this all on

don't know....

India should stay neutral on Mittal Steel bid Mr Ratan Tata

Mr Ratan Tata, chairman of the TATA group, has said that the Indian
government should not have any role to play in Mr Lakshmi Mittals bid
for Arcelor. It was a decision best left to Arcelors shareholders.

In an interview to TV anchor Charlie Rose, Mr Ratan Tata said: If they
think its good for them, I would imagine they would sell. Its not an
Indian company. He is an Indian national but has lived overseas for
many years. His company is registered in Rotterdam. The Indian
government should ideally not be involved or take sides as its an
issue the Arcelor shareholders have to decide.

merger between his company, Mittal Steel and Arecelor for $34 billion.
The megamergers within utilities, oil and gas firms and the steel
industry appear to be getting more painful to conclude. Arcelor fought
the merger ruthlessly before relenting and now a son of India is
running a steel giant from Luxembourg. The new company will be named
Arcelor-Mittal. The new company will also have 320,000 employees, $70
billion in revenue and 100 million tons of annual capacity. Lakshmi

Gujarat NRE Coke wishes to condemn in the strongest words the manner
in which Austral Coke and Projects Limited, whose public issue has
opened on August 7th 2008 has used half truths and downright lies in

Mozambique to resume coal exports in 2010

Mozambique will restart exporting coal in 2010, following the
reconstruction of a railroad giving the Moatize coal field access to
the sea.

MAPUTO (Reuters) -

Mozambique will resume coal exports in 2010 after reconstructing a 665
km railroad from the Moatize coal fields to the harbour in the central
port city of Beira, a top official said on Tuesday.

National Director of Mines, Fatima Momade told Reuters the Sena
railroad, whose rehabilitation began in 2002, would be completed by
that time.

The repairs are being carried out by Indian consortium Right and Icon,
which has a 51 percent stake in the group, while Mozambique's Ports
and Railways Company (CFM) holds the remaining 49 percent
shareholding.

Rehabilitation is budgeted at a $475 million, paid for through a World
Bank loan.....

As world demand for coal booms big mining companies have started
flocking into Mozambique.

Mozambican authorities have so far issued a total of 125 licenses for
coal exploration, mostly in western Tete province and the northernmost
province of Niassa.

Brazilian mining giant, Vale, formerly Companhia Vale do Rio Doce
(CVRD), is investing over $2 billion after the government granted it a
25-year concession to mine coal in Moatize, which is believed to
contain 2.4 billion tonnes of coal deposits. Vale is expected to begin
mining in 2010.

As CISPES solidarity prepares for 2009, a few things we know for certain:

El Salvador is ripe for change:
➢   the social movement and FMLN are solidly united behind the candidacy of Mauricio Funes for president and Salvador Sanchez Ceren for vice president after a triumphant recent convention (see photo of Funes at the convention on August 17.)
➢   the population as a whole is fed up with the right-wing ARENA party’s corporate-oriented economic program
➢    recent polls show the FMLN ticket ahead by anywhere from 7 to 21 points!

Meanwhile ARENA is using varied program of dirty tactics in a desperate effort to hold onto power:
➢   ARENA has refused to implement recommendations of the Organization of American States to reform the electoral process
➢   They have threatened serious restrictions on the activities of international electoral observers
➢   They have removed ballot-counting regulations that prevent ballot box stuffing
➢   Human rights advocates have noted an alarming rise in murders of political activists which the National Civilian Police refuse to investigate seriously

Despite the assurance of Ambassador Charles Glazer to not intervene in the elections, the U.S. is at this very moment waging a propaganda war in support of ARENA:
➢   U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and the Ambassador have both linked the FMLN to the FARC rebels of Colombia.
➢   Ambassador Glazer also publicly endorsed claims by journalists at a right wing newspaper that an FMLN victory would lead to attacks on press freedom
➢   The International Republican Institute (IRI), funded by the National Endowment for Democracy and headed by John McCain, gave President Saca its “Freedom Award” last fall .
