Three organizers at Stop the Machine! encampment occupying Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C. are focused on increasing the green & black radical environmental presence in D.C. before the Spring Offensive-Phase Two of the Occupy Movement in March. PLEASE JOIN WITH US!

Three organizers at Stop the Machine! encampment occupying Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C., wish to go visit other Occupy camps.  Our collective purpose is to increase the number of green & black frontline radical environmental participants in Washington D.C. before the Spring Offensive--Phase Two of the Occupy Movement in March.  We are saying that it is worse than irresponsible that America's national capital has only a minimal direct action oriented ecodefensive presence.  A former Potomac Earth First! member emailed me to say that the group is no longer active.

In the hills surrounding the Susquehanna River and its tributaries, rural Pennsylvanians have created a new campaign, called Occupy WELL Street, as a way to confront and speak out against the oil and gas corporations laying siege to our communities in their relentless pursuit of natural gas. Participants of Occupy Well Street have been working side by side with several Earth First! groups in the region to create this, our Pledge of Resistance to hydraulic fracturing and the promises of gas royalties at the cost of ruined land, toxic water, polluted air, and divided communities.

Occupy Well Street is taking a stand against the social pressure, lawsuits and occasional death threats that pro-gas individuals and gas corporations have been directing at many of those resisting the spread of fracking operations across the Marcellus region for the past few years. We are fed up with feeling isolated and silenced, and are frustrated with the idea that many others in rural communities may be hesitating to speak out for fear of threats, social consequences and legal action. We believe this is not an issue centered around individuals who sign leases, but is a case of multinational corporations preying on rural areas in order to make as much money as possible.

The world’s population surpassed 7 billion on October 31. But except for perhaps the anti-family planning lobby, this was a milestone that few were in a mood to celebrate.

Concerns about overpopulation were present when the world hit the 6 billion mark in 1999, but they were subdued in that era of growth and — at least in the North — optimism. There was a sense then that although there would be major hurdles along the way, the world’s future could only get brighter.

Globalization, according to its apostles — foremost among them then-U.S. President Bill Clinton — was inevitable, and could only bring about a better life for all. The Kyoto Protocol had just been adopted, and although it had its flaws, it seemed to be the first step in an increasingly coordinated global effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Obama’s Continued Failures on the Environment and Jobs

By Steven Argue

On Friday September 2, President Obama directed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator, Lisa Jackson, to withdraw proposed regulations on ground level ozone. Ground level ozone is the main component of smog. Obama’s decision overruled the position of the EPA and the unanimous opinion of its panel of scientific advisors in the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC). Obama’s instructions for the EPA to ignore the findings of the CASAC are a violation of the law as established under the Clean Air Act.

A growing, more affluent population competing for ever scarcer resources could make for an "unrecognizable" world by 2050, researchers warned at a major US science conference Sunday.

The United Nations has predicted the global population will reach seven billion this year, and climb to nine billion by 2050, "with almost all of the growth occurring in poor countries, particularly Africa and South Asia," said John Bongaarts of the non-profit Population Council.

To feed all those mouths, "we will need to produce as much food in the next 40 years as we have in the last 8,000," said Jason Clay of the World Wildlife Fund at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

"By 2050 we will not have a planet left that is recognizable" if current trends continue, Clay said.
