COINTELPRO
by
Michael Richardson | 11.10.2008
At the time of the murder trial in April 1971, COINTELPRO was still largely unknown to the American public. The jurors had no idea Hoover had ordered that no report be made of a critical voice analysis in the case. The break-in at a satellite FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania on March 8, 1971, three weeks before the Omaha trial, led to the first public revelations of the massive clandestine operation when secret COINTELPRO documents were discovered. Meanwhile in Nebraska, withheld from defense attorneys and kept from jurors, the recorded voice of Larry Minard's killer to the police emergency hotline was the subject of Hoover's direct command.

In some ways it was easier for my generation. Racism was blatant and obvious. The "Whites Only" signs let us know clearly, what we were up against. Not much has changed, but the system of lies and tricknology is much more sophisticated. Today young people have to be highly informed and acutely analytical, or they will be swept up into a whirlpool of lies and deception.

Poindexter and Langa had been targets of COINTELPRO for their leadership roles in the Black Panther affiliate and were disliked by most local police for their sharp criticism of the shooting death of 14 year-old Vivian Strong by police in the summer of 1969. Both men further inflamed police hostility by their repeated use of the word "pig" to describe police officers.
J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for forty-eight years, was one of the most feared men in Washington, D.C.
