Masks of Empire

It would be easy to succumb to the euphoria of the hour.
Easy. Too easy.
Despite this effluvia of euphoria, blown higher by a media that has learned its role of servitude to power all too well, we have seen reasons to be concerned.
Media reportage and cheers of purported cabinet choices (from a media that claimed to have learned its lesson about cheerleading after the Iraq debacle), should give us pause, for they seem designed more for reassurance than to change.

Obama Mania - by Stephen Lendman
On November 4, the world exhaled. The age of George Bush ended, and a new one under Barak Obama began. With high hopes he'll reverse the toxic legacy of the past eight years. Adopt socially progressive policies. End foreign wars. Govern the nation responsibly, democratically for all its people. Show his supporters that their faith in him was justified.
"Let us congratulate ourselves on being alive at such a promising moment," wrote The Nation magazine's William Greider. His victory is "a monumental rebuke to tragic history -- the ultimate defeat of 'while supremacy.' Barak Obama has already changed this nation profoundly. Like King before him, the man is a great and brave teacher. (He) redefined the country for us."

Gore and Kerry got in trouble for suggesting a gas tax for ecological conversion, so Obama by far the better candidate, out fluffed the Republicans by being the candidate of undefined hope. The American people growing ever more ignorant since no one from Nader on up is talking about any harsh realities With the Republicans preparing to blame Obama for the upcoming depression even though the depression would be much worse under McCain.
This is also at FireDogLake and CapitalHillBlue and needs comments and to be spread around the country.

The best candidate won if cheating doesn't derail his victory.
The blame game is soon to begin. Let's get a head start on tying to present reality. The sooner we can put reality on the table by spreading around essays like this one, the easier it will be for Obama to do an adequate job.
Obama and McCain kept outdoing themselves in presenting fluff. The voters thought domestic policy was more important than foreign policy. Neither candidate (nor the third parties want to be's) bothered to try to correct this. The polls showed many thought McCain better on foreign policy. So Obama instead of mentioning hatred toward US imperialism as a permanent world-view, in the long run, is extremely hazardous to the average American's future, he instead picked Biden for vice president.

Barack Obama dropped a bomb on his young enthusiasts at Columbia University on September 11. The heavily Democratic crowd booed McCain when he called for the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) to be brought back to campus (it was driven out in 1969 by protests against the Vietnam war). Liberal students expected a different answer from Columbia alum Obama, but the forum was a symphony of agreement as both candidates campaigned for expanding the military and pledged their enthusiastic support to U.S. imperialism. That should have been the tip-off for anyone who hadn't figured it out by then: Obama is no "peace candidate" but like McCain he is a certified imperialist war candidate.

At a time when the tens of millions of people who have the potential strength to stop this war are being pacified and corralled into a dead-end, what meaning does it have to call oneself “anti-war” if you are not protesting outside the convention? Anyone serious about stopping this whole direction of unjust war, torture and fascist repression should be in the streets.

Many claim that Obama shows strength of character when he said "Don't mess with my wife" and that McCain is better when it comes to foreign policy, means most don't have a clue.

Radicals are typically cynical about government, with good reason.
Unfortunately, there is a damaging tendency for radicals to remain
unbending in their theory. The cliche is true: what doesn't bend
breaks. There are occasions when it is critical for the movement to
put praxis over theory. This is one of those moments.
