After the wave of savage repression and gratuitous violence that characterized the response of those in power to the organization of our meetings and marches in recent months; the free expression of our opinion on the political situation of our country here is a sign of our our perseverance, our consistency and especially our determination to continue our noble struggle for the restoration of democracy.  This has finally forced the authorities to do justice to what constitutes the minimum of civil rights by authorizing the holding of this gathering.

When a person commits a crime, everyone has an answer as to what punishment should or should not be meted out. But what do you do when a law is a crime unto itself, and society is committing the crime?

MOVE supporter, I. Abdul Jon used to say, 'You only need to talk and write about freedom of speech, and freedom of religion and all other kinds of freedom if you ain't got it; 'cause if you got it, and ain't got no problem with nobody else havin' it -- and it's real, you ain't gotta write about, and talk about protectin' it, and whatnot....'

The Constitution (And Other Illusions)

[col. writ. 3/14/09] (c) '09 Mumia Abu-Jamal

We are all taught, seemingly in the cradle, about the glorious Constitution, a document that lies at the very heart of America's civil religion.

Schoolchildren used to be taught to memorize broad swaths of its provisions (although it's extremely doubtful that this is done today, in the wake of the disastrous 'No Child Left Behind' policy), along with the national mythology of the Founding Fathers as latter-day Olympians handing down freedom from the heavens.

Is Acting U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid aware of this judicial bypass -- or has the truth been concealed from her by agencies with a hidden ideological agenda?

location: Calvary Church - 48th & Baltimore Ave. (W. Philly) -- on the #34 Subway-surface line.

On Tuesday, December 9th the International Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal and the Philadelphia International Action Center will co-host an event featuring food and a film - Racist Injustice - on the movement to free Mumia.

The program will include open discussion on what comes next.

Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham, known as the "deadliest DA in the US", is calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate Mumia's death sentence, despite the mounds of evidence of his innocence. If Abraham's filing is granted that would mean execution for Mumia without even a new hearing or a new trial. We must be prepared to confront this outrage and fight to win Mumia's freedom.
