YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE! Voter Protection Volunteers Needed
by

The 2008 presidential election will be historic indeed, because it may have exponentially more people of color than ever who will not be allowed to vote. Probably an exorbitant amount.
A lawyer friend and I volunteered for Election Protection in 2004, it helped, but now I am utterly baffled at why I have not heard the call out for volunteers at all for this election. So I researched which organizations were organizing volunteers this time around, and here is what I found.
Election Protection never called back.
League of Women Voters New York board member passed my message along but had not heard of her group organizing volunteers, nor had she heard of any other group doing any organizing around this issue.
NAACP New Jersey worker passed my message along but had not heard of her group organizing volunteers, nor had she heard of any other group doing any organizing around this issue.
ACLU New York worker said they are organizing voter protection volunteers, and said to call if interested.
League of Woman Voters New Jersey worker referred me to ACLU New Jersey who is organizing voter protection volunteers.
ACLU New Jersey is also the only one of these groups that has voter protection volunteer info on their website.
***SO IF YOU WANT TO BE A POLL WATCHER (help people not allowed to vote to be able to see a judge, BY 3 PM!!!) OR ANSWER CALLS AT THE HELP CENTER ON ELECTION DAY,

They seem to have it more going on in this respect.***
It probably does not matter this time where you live vs. where you volunteer. It looks like volunteers will be needed for at least 4 hours, and training will be for at least 3 hours at some point beforehand.
Please spread the word that volunteers are needed EN MASS, and SOON; the ELECTION is literally IN ONE MONTH.
Please also spread the word, I speak from experience, that if anyone is REFUSED their RIGHT TO VOTE and this happens AFTER 3 PM ON ELECTION DAY, they will almost certainly NOT NOT NOT BE ABLE TO SEE A JUDGE.
The red tape I went through in an average suburban NJ town to get an absentee ballot for an ill relative to vote in the last primary election took 5 HOURS, from 3 PM until 8 PM. Oddly enough there were NO LINES at any of the offices where I was sent.
You might think your vote may not count. You're correct, it might not. But know that someone is counting how many of us vote. If you do not vote, in the eyes of those in power, that inaction is a vote for complacency, which makes them very happy. “Sleeeep, my pretties. I'll take care of everything (evil laugh)!”
