Protest Rally and Strategy Forum to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal and other Political Prisoners this Saturday, August 9
Featuring Pam Africa, representatives from the ACLU, Pennsylvania Prison Society, Public Defender's Office, and more!

Philadelphia, PA – The International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal (ICFFMAJ) is hosting a protest rally and organizers meeting on August 9, 2008, at 1199C (Juniper and Locust St.), 12 – 6 pm. The large-scale forum will be discussing the need and strategy for people to take action to free political prisoners Mumia Abu-Jamal and the MOVE 9 during this crucial time period.  On July 22, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals went against its own precedents and rejected Abu-Jamal's appeal on the basis that black jurors were pulled from his case based on race, thereby denying him a new guilt-phase trial.  Judge Thomas Ambros stated in his dissenting opinion that the court’s ruling "goes against the grain of our prior actions…I see no reason why we should not afford Abu-Jamal the courtesy of our precedents.”  Abu-Jamal is now appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court for his very last chance at being granted a new guilt-phase trial.

Abu-Jamal has been on Death Row for almost thirty years for the alleged murder of police officer Daniel Faulkner.  The eight living members of the MOVE 9 have been in prison for thirty years for allegedly killing police officer James Ramp.  Circumstances surrounding both these killings suggest the corresponding convictions are unlawful, being racially and politically motivated.  The controversies have given rise to an international movement of millions, including intellectuals like Noam Chomsky and Toni Morrison, as well as politicians like Nelson Mandela, calling for the release of Abu-Jamal and the MOVE 9.  Martin Luther King III, said, "From the aerial bombing of MOVE to the unjust incarceration of MOVE members, Mumia Abu-Jamal and countless others… we understand the need to continue and remain steadfast in our struggle for freedom."  This Saturday, hundreds of students, teachers, activists, community members, and lawyers will gather to discuss the best ways to pressure those with power to release the innocent from prison.
