Report Shows Philly Has Top Prison Rate in the Country

The United States has the highest prison rate and prison population in the world.

A report released by the Justice Policy Institute today shows that Philadelphia has the top rate of incarceration in the country.

From the Justice Policy Institute:

Communities are bearing the cost of a massive explosion in the jail population which has nearly doubled in less than two decades, according to a new report released today by the Justice Policy Institute (JPI). The research found that jails are now warehousing more people--who have not been found guilty of any crime--for longer periods of time than ever before. The research shows that in part due to the rising costs of bail, people arrested today are much more likely to serve jail time before trial than they would have been twenty years ago, even though crime rates are nearly at the lowest levels in thirty years.

Just a month ago the Pew Center on the States reported that 1 in 100 Americans are behind bars. 1 in 106 white men are behind bars while an astounding 1 in 9 African Americans between the ages of 20 and 34 are behind bars.

The Justice Policy Institute report shows the higher incarceration rates in the largest cities do not correlate in lower crime and in fact lower prision rates have accompanied reduced crime rates.

These findings were reported in the Daily News today by Catherine Lucy.

you haVE NO IDEA HOW TO INTERPRET THE CRIME RESULTS, SO PLEASE BE QUIET YOU ARE NO EXPERT. COMMON SENSE TELLS YOU WHERE THERE ARE MORE PROJECTS, THEIR WILL BE A HIGHER CRIME RATE. I HAVE LIVED IN THREE CITIES AND WITHOUT DISCRIMINATING MY OWN PEOPLE, THE HIGHEST CRIMES ARE ALWAYS IN THE "PROJECTS", THE ONES WITH THE LOWEST INCOME, WHERE DRUGS ARE A MAJOR PROBLEM.
SEEMS LIKE MOST YOUTH TODAY DO NOT WANT TO FOLLOW THE AMERICAN DREAM, BUT INSTEAD WANT TO FOLLOW THE "GANSTER DREAM". LETS FACE IT, OUR YOUTH TODAT WANT TO CHEAT, STEAL, ROB, KILL FOR EASY MONEY, INSTEAD OF WORKING THE OLD FASHION WAY WERE THEY CAN HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW FOR THIER HONEST HARD WORK. JUST A COMMON SENSE OBSERVATION.
