About the "it's More Than Just A Dream" MLK Commemorative Service
April 6, 3-5 pm
Arch St. Methodist Church, 55 N. Broad St.
The Philadelphia Officers and Workers Rising (POWR) campaign is a project of Jobs with Justice. POWR is a campaign to reform the low-waged, private, security industry. This industry in Philadelphia has many companies but is dominated by King of Prussia based, AlliedBarton.
AlliedBarton’s largest investor is MacAndrews and Forbes, an investment vehicle of billionaire Ronald O. Perelman. Ron Perelman, son of Ruth and Raymond Perelman, has security contracts at many of Philadelphia’s most prominent institutions such as Temple University, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Kimmel Center.
The “More Than Just A Dream” service is a call to action. Local clergy, security guards and activists remind the community that, as with the POWR campaign, forty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated while standing up with black workers who were fighting for a voice on the job, better wages and benefits.
In 1968, black workers were faced the systemic discrimination of an employer who refused to acknowledge their desire to be a union. Today, AlliedBarton, the largest employer of African-American workers in Philadelphia, uses the systemic barriers (See Section 9 (b)3 of the NRLA), economic disenfranchisement (sub-contracting) and strong arm tactics to disenfranchise workers.
POWR campaign uses innovative techniques to win wage and benefit improvements for workers. We believe that the employer and the clients must be reformed to truly change the lives for the thousands of workers in private security. Most recently, POWR won more than $2 million in new wages and benefits for workers at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University.
Call To Action: “I AM A HuMan.” We demand that the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Kimmel Center and Temple University demand that in order to keep their contract with AlliedBarton, AlliedBarton must voluntarily recognizes the workers union, Philadelphia Security Officers Union.
Join Us: To get our demand met, we will mobilizes thousands of prayers, during the weekend of April 5, and march to the Kimmel Center, Perelman Auditorium on March 6, 3-5 pm (beginning at Arch St. Methodist, 55 N. Broad St., to Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St.)
