RADICAL PEACE WALKING TOUR SATURDAY
IN MEDIA TO CELEBRATE PEACE ACTIVISM
& 30 YEARS OF THE BRANDYWINE PEACE
COMMUNITY
Group To Begin at 1971 Site of Media FBI Break-in
MEDIA, PA: The Brandywine Peace Community, one of the
most celebrated peace activist groups in the country - and certainly
one of the most active and longest standing - will this Saturday
(October 20th) hold, in its birthplace of Media, PA, a Radical
Peace Walking Tour celebrating its 30 years of peace activism
and nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience. The
Radical Peace Walking Tour will begin at 11AM in front of the
Delaware County Courthouse, Veterans Square & Front Street,
in Media, across the street from the County Court Apartment
Building which in 1971 housed the Media office of the FBI .
In March of 1971, in one of the most heralded anti-war actions in
U.S. history, people broke into the FBI office, taking and
circulating files which exposed a widespread campaign of spying
on Vietnam-era war protesters and civil rights activists. October
20th is the 40th Anniversary of the 1967 Mass March on the
Pentagon in which tens of thousands people marched and 600 were
arrested in the first mass protest of the Vietnam War.
The walking tour will commence throughout the town of Media
stopping for short recollections at other sites significant to peace
activism over the years and to the beginnings of the Brandywine
Peace Community, among them the Media Fellowship House and
the former Armory on State Street [now Trader Joe�s and the
Pennsylvania Veterans Museum].
The walk will conclude at another site associated with peace
activism, Media Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of
Friends (Quakers), 125 W. 3rd Street, where there will be a lunch
and celebration of the Brandywine Peace Community that will
feature poetry, story-telling, and music by singer-songwriter, Tom
Mullian.
The Brandywine Peace Community, the faith-based peace
activist group founded in the Fall of 1976, in Media, PA, continues
full time in its war resistance and peace campaigns challenging
throughout the Delaware Valley the corporate war economy of
Lockheed Martin (the world's largest weapons corporation and the
Iraq War's chief profiteer) and U.S. war-making policy in Iraq and
around the world. As part of its ongoing campaigns of dramatic
nonviolent direct action, its members and supporters have been
arrested and jailed repeatedly for acts of nonviolent civil
disobedience over the years.
The Brandywine Peace Community is one of the groups in the
forefront of organizing the mass demonstration on Saturday,
October 27, in Philadelphia as part of a nationwide
mobilization to end the war in Iraq. being called by United
for Peace & Justice, the U.S.�s largest anti-war coalition. The
anti-war demonstration will include a noontime �Human
Chain for Peace� between the Veterans Administration
Hospital, 38th & Woodland Avenue, and the Phila. Federal
Building, 6th & Market Streets, followed by a march and a
2PM Mass Rally & Outdoor Anti-War Festival at the
Independence Mall Visitors Center, Market Street between 5th
and 6th Streets. Organizers expect thousands of people from
throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region to converge on
Philadelphia for the October 27th mobilization against the war.
