Human Rights Coalition will launch their Stop Prisoner Abuse campaign by releasing Buried Alive.

Philadelphia, PA—April 21, 2006—Human Rights Coalition will launch their Stop Prisoner Abuse campaign by releasing Buried Alive. This report includes testimonies the group collected from prisoners housed in Pennsylvania’s solitary confinement as well as those from family members with loved ones who are suffering in solitary confinement. Buried Alive is the first of several reports intended to educate Pennsylvania citizens about the various forms of abuse that are rampant within the state’s prisons and to facilitate a state-wide effort to abolish long term segregation.

Buried Alive will be released to the general public on Saturday, May 20, 1-4:30 PM at the Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street in Center City. The release event will feature a reading of testimonies from the report, a film on the impact of solitary confinement, and a panel comprised of former prisoners who have experienced confinement. In coordinating the day’s activities, HRC has incorporated a block of time during which attendees can engage in discussion and planning.

The event is co-sponsored by the Criminal Justice Program of the American Friends Service Committee, Pennsylvania Institutional Law Project, and Pennsylvania Prison Society.

Human Rights Coalition (HRC) is a Philadelphia organization comprised primarily of prisoner family members and formerly-incarcerated people. Integrating a focus on prisoner support, family support group, and social change, HRC works to challenge the injustices of our criminal justice system.
