Right now members of Congress are weighing their decisions for or against health care reform and what the shape of it will be. When trying to take in the entirety of the topic and public opinion on reform, it's easy to become confused or harbor doubts as to how best to proceed. As much as many find the idea of not standing up for principles without budging as much as an inch inconceivable, often politicians must do exactly that. It isn't necessary to completely allow one's campaign platforms to collapse under the weight of varying polls or loud hollers. But, one must do an amount of compromising to gain popular support to remain in office.
When public opinion is all over the place fears can set in. The nervous pangs that sometimes afflict most of us are constant buzzing reminders in the sides of career politicians. They mark the fact that every turn, every vote and every spoken word could spell ruin for their career. However, when conflicting messages swirl about remember it is a time to stop, wait, step back and take a few moments to get bearings and a true read on the landscape. Right now even the most seasoned politicians on the hill are running for cover and who can blame them? Some who would like to support the obvious will of the majority of Americans according to polls and recent elections supporting pro health care reform messages still remain hesitant. Some politicians known as supporters of the people, down to earth and even willing to engage in a political "street fight" for their constituents if necessary are hiding behind playing both sides of the fence, thus betraying their underlying fears. These are times for the courageous. These are times for the brave. These are time for the forward thinking women and men of Capitol Hill to be people for action. These are the times to consider the women and men fighting overseas and the homes they come back to. For although they have coverage (which could always be better) their families may not. The parents they come home to live with may not. The people they rely on may not. They may not all fall into the boxes of those whose loved ones or caretakers are fortunate enough to receive coverage. The pulls say it - the majority of Americans want coverage. The spectacular movement of the health care industry backed Tea Party and affiliates is interesting. These are groups which based on their tenacity will always have a presence in politics as long as they stay motivated and engaged. Although I don't agree with all they put forth I applaud their efforts and support their right to do so and hope to see more of it. The phenomena of the Conservative Party's rise on the national scene is a terrific step forward in our evolution as a body politic. The expensive commercials, the same people bussed in to various sites from all over the country and the wild shouting and policeman shoving all say something else. There may not be as many of them, but unfortunately for those of us just doing all we can to work for a living we don't have the time to be as loud. We pour the house foundations, we drive the fire trucks, we sweep the floors, we pick the lettuce, we calculate the mortgages, we survey the land and so so much more. Just look at the facts and see what's good for America. See what's good for that farmer, see what's good for that teacher, see what's good for that real estate agent, see what's good for that customer service rep, see what that administrative assistant needs - see what's good for a nation ready for change. The status quo has many supporters, but the majority is not what they have and not who came out last fall. The majority, those people in the polls, are silently waiting. They watch you on the news when they get home from work and believe me they are deciding at those moments whether they will go out to vote and who they will get the vote out for. Those with some financial incentive may be somewhat passionate, but getting rich means nothing when compared to being safe and secure at home. Making sure those kids are safe and mommy and daddy are well and healthy enough to guide them towards a decent future are momentous decisions in comparison. Have compassion for the people who everyday closely follow your every word after a hard day at work. Inspire them with this deed and more afterwards so they may come out again in furtherance of what you will have proven to be real American change.
