U.S. Hands Off Honduras!
For the Immediate and Unconditional Return of President Manuel Zelaya!

Down With the Coup Makers!
Self-Determination for Honduras!

¡ Solidaridad internacional con la lucha del pueblo hondureño!

¡Fuera el golpe militar de Honduras!

¡Ningún pacto con los golpistas!

Socialist Action strongly condemns the coup d’etat in Honduras. We stand in solidarity with the Honduran workers and farmers, and their supporters, as they organize street mobilizations and the political general strike to bring down the regime of Robert Micheletti and the Honduran bourgeoisie.

It is essential that all supporters of democratic rights in the US uphold the right to self-determination of the people of Honduras. We must completely oppose any US attempt to “negotiate” with the coup-makers or any similar scheme to impose a pro-US government on a sovereign nation.  We should demand that the US dismantle its base at Sono Cano and withdraw all US military personnel and equipment from Honduras. The US should break all ties and suspend all aid to the Honduran coup regime.

The favorable response by the Obama administration to the coup plotters should be seen as part of Washington’s renewed offensive in funding projects directed against Chavez in Venezuela and other populist governments in the region; including those of Bolivia, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. We should make it clear that the people of the United States will not tolerate a return to an era where the US could impose its will without challenge in Latin America.

We look to the US labor movement to solidarize with the workers on strike and to publicize their demands in the US and around the world.  We should support President Zelaya’s return to office without negotiations, conditions or compromises. It’s the choice of the majority of Hondurans that he return.

The movement in Honduras faces several challenges – first the defeat of the coup plotters; which can only come through mass mobilization and the use of the general political strike.
Another challenge is the campaign for a constituent assembly; which should be organized with direct participation of popular organizations, student groups, peasant organizations and unions.

A constituent assembly would be empowered to change the constitution and form of government but also would be a place to raise broader demands like land reform - giving land to those who work it – workers control of factories and the banking system, free education, literacy and health care. As the coup shows, even the suggestion of the most modest social reforms will be violently opposed by the oligarchy.  The constituent assembly should disband the police, judiciary and the military to make any future coup impossible. The workers and farmers should also form self-defense groups to defend against reactionaries and death squads tied to the ruling class.

The independent organization of the Honduran workers and peasants and the construction of a revolutionary socialist party are necessary for the Honduran people to challenge the power of the two parties that have ruled Honduras in the interests of the U.S-backed oligarchy.
