Two More Weeklies Fold: Germantown Courier and Mount Airy Times Express
by
Brian Rudnick | 02.11.2009
This week will be the last issue of both the Germantown Courier and Mount Airy Times Express which succumbed to the triple whammy of the recession, hard times for print media, and the poor health of its parent, the Journal Register Company which is closing other weeklies i the city as well. Here Editor Karl Biemuller talks about the situation and expresses confidence that people in the community, especially the Mount Airy community associations will rally to fill the void.
Partial transcript of video interview with Editor Karl Biemuller
So this is it for the Mount Airy Express- Germantown Courier? Finito. We are done as of the issue of February 11th. That’ll be our last and it’s on the streets now as a matter of fact. Two things happened. First of all the recession. It’s hurting everyone. It’s certainly hurting the print media badly. We suffered some erosion anyway but I think we would have weathered it. However our parent company [Journal register company]is in very bad financial condition and anything that could be cut had to be cut for their continued existence and we were one of the sacrifices…I do know the gap will be filled because it is a big gap...." Dang!
Submitted by Rich Gardner on Wed, 02/11/2009 - 1:36amVery distressing to learn of this as these papers were some of the very few to publish accounts of anti-war demonstrations. Most of the media ignores that sort of thing.
Very sorry to see them go.
Mt Times Express - a loss
Submitted by John Kahler (not verified) on Wed, 02/11/2009 - 5:52pmI live and work in Mt Airy, and the Times-Express has always done an exceptional job of covering the community. Hopefully the community through its strong organizations can come together to develop a community media presence to replace the Times-Express. Karl and his staff are to be thanked and commended. Unfortunately, JR thought it was in the money printing business, not news business. I lived in a different area with a JR daily and the JR owners thought they had cash factories - you could see the way corporate news - when things looked good - was fed directly to the paper business section. Until their financial model wasn't working. Thanks to all the Times-Express people, I hope you stay in the community and continue to keep us informed. - John

St. Michael's Lutheran Church has always depended on and been grateful for your media presence in the community. You have come to St. Michael's often and have always done a great job keeping the community abreast of our happenings.
We will be sorry to see you go....and hope for a better future for you. I believe in the Resurrection - and that we will ALL "rise" one way or another from this terrible financial crisis! Blessings!
