Crackdowns, Torture and Intimidation in Bahrain - by Stephen Lendman

Largely ignored by Washington, Western governments, and America's media, the ruling Al Khalifa monarchy continues cracking down brutally against nonviolent protesters since civil resistance began last February.

On July 14, UK Telegraph writer Richard Spencer headlined, "Bahraini woman poet tells of torture while in custody," saying:

Incarcerated after reciting a poem critical of government policies, "Ayat al-Qurmezi (age 20) became one of the symbols of the (ongoing) protests....After she was arrested....she was beaten, electro(shocked) and threatened with sexual assault while in custody."

FBI Entraps Two More Muslims - by Stephen Lendman

By now, the familiar storyline sounds more like a film plot than criminal indictment, especially when Muslims are involved, and the most recent case repeats the same scenario used last December.

Then it involved Antonio Martinez, aka Muhammad Hussain, accused of plotting to attack an armed forces recruiting center. An undercover FBI agent lawlessly entrapped him, supplying an inert bomb, then stopping him after he allegedly tried to detonate it by remote control. A previous article discussed him, accessed through the following link:

Israel Toughening Conditions for Palestinian Detainees - by Stephen Lendman

On June 24, Haaretz writers Barak Ravid and Revital Hoval headlined, "Netanyahu: Israel to toughen conditions for Palestinian prisoners," saying:

On June 23, Netanyahu announced plans "to toughen the conditions of Palestinian security prisoners," meaning all of them wanting Palestine to be free, yet few committed crimes warranting imprisonment.

During his Jerusalem Israeli Presidential Conference, he said:

"We will give them all that they deserve according to international law, but nothing beyond that," despite systematically brutalizing detainees ruthlessly. More on that below. He added that:

For protesting on the county steps against Santa Cruz laws that make it illegal for the homeless to sleep at night, homeless activists Gary Johnson (no relation to Becky Johnson) and Attorney Ed Frey were sentenced to 6 months in jail on June 10th. Bail was set for Ed Frey, pending appeal, at $50,000. Their only act of civil disobedience was sleeping. This occurred at their three month protest called “Peace Camp 2010”. Revealing the political nature of the draconian sentences, Judge Gallagher told homeless activist Gary Johnson that he “could get some sleep in jail” before they were dragged away in chains for their 6 month sentences. The law they were protesting makes it illegal for the homeless to sleep at night, outside or in a vehicle.

Free Gary Johnson! Overturn the Convictions of Ed Frey, Arthur Bishoff, and Collette Connolly! Hands off Christopher Doyon!

We are a nation that likes to point to other nations in order to make ourselves feel better. We don't do it as much as we used to, but from time to time we still point to this or that nation in the news etc. and say, “see these guys, we are better than them.” In the eighties, when I was growing up, we did this on a daily basis and in an almost mocking fashion. The idea was the rest of the world was just plain wrong and in order to be right they needed to be more like us.

In many of those countries we pointed to their systems of oppression to prove how much better life was here. It allayed our fears here helping us to believe we were secure in our spending on defense and wrapped in a pillowy impenetrable layer of protection through a shared ethos. Our freedom was indeed much better than that of those countries we pointed to.
No matter how much people extolled the benefits and utopian ideals of Soviet style communism there was no longer a way for those people to hide the obvious failure. In the Soviet Union there were the pictures on TV of the bread lines that people had to wait in and the shoe lines and the lines for other goods and services. There were the defectors and their stories.

Killings, Detentions and Torture in Egypt - by Stephen Lendman

On February 9, London Guardian writer Chris McGreal headlined, "Egypt's army 'involved in detentions and torture,' " saying:

Military forces "secretly detained hundreds and possibly thousands of suspected government opponents since mass (anti-Mubarak) protests began, (and) at least some of these detainees have been tortured, according to testimony gathered by the Guardian."

Attorneys for the Ft Dix 5 will be making oral arguments in the legal appeal against the convictions of the Ft Dix 5 on Monday, May 23rd at the Federal Building (6th & Market Sts) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The court hearing begins at 1:30pm.

Prior to the hearing, supporters of the 5 men will be rallying outside the courthouse between 10AM and 1PM. Family members, friends and others concerned about the right to a fair trial believe these five innocent men were convicted in 2008 because of the prosecution's repeated efforts to sow fear and hostility towards Islam within the jury.

Lies, Damn Lies, and Misreporting about Gitmo Detainees - by Stephen Lendman

Post-9/11, The New York Times became the lead misreporting source about Guantanamo detainees, largely characterizing them as dangerous terrorists threatening US security.

For example, on July 25, 2007, (like its many other reports) William Glaberson headlined, "New US study calls Guantanamo captives dangerous," saying:

A new Pentagon study "argues that large numbers of detainees were a direct threat to United States forces, including Al Qaeda fighters, terrorism-training camp veterans and men who had experience with explosives, sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenades."
