For protesting on the county steps against Santa Cruz laws that make it illegal for the homeless to sleep at night, homeless activists Gary Johnson (no relation to Becky Johnson) and Attorney Ed Frey were sentenced to 6 months in jail on June 10th. Bail was set for Ed Frey, pending appeal, at $50,000. Their only act of civil disobedience was sleeping. This occurred at their three month protest called “Peace Camp 2010”. Revealing the political nature of the draconian sentences, Judge Gallagher told homeless activist Gary Johnson that he “could get some sleep in jail” before they were dragged away in chains for their 6 month sentences. The law they were protesting makes it illegal for the homeless to sleep at night, outside or in a vehicle.
Free Gary Johnson! Overturn the Convictions of Ed Frey, Arthur Bishoff, and Collette Connolly! Hands off Christopher Doyon!

Washington's indifference to a growing problem
Growing Homelessness in America - by Stephen Lendman
In the world's richest country, the trend is shocking, disturbing and appalling. In its 2009 report on "Hunger and Homelessness in US Cities," the US Conference of Mayors stated:
"Hunger and homelessness (are) at record levels in US cities," citing an overall 26% demand increase over the past year and 19% more homelessness. Yet worsening conditions leave millions on their own and out of luck because Washington has other priorities excluding them.
"At a time of historic economic crisis, the issues of hunger and homelessness in America are more prevalent than ever." Cities are hard-pressed to handle them, and planned budget cuts and revenue shortfalls will strap them well into the future.

On Monday people across the city remembered the eight-seven souls that died in this last year either living on the streets or in shelters. Eight-seven people! This is a dramatic rise from the previous year and it is shameful.
It is shameful of the Nutter administration, which has closed our homeless cafe's, the last refuge for those of us without homes in times of unbearable bone-chilling weather. It is shameful of the federal government, which in a time of economic crisis, chooses to bail out banks and looks the other way when it comes to the dire LIFE AND DEATH services of people that are struggling to survive. And most of all it is a shame on our free market system which allows companies like AIG to prosper, giving away absurd amounts of money in bonuses--that would make sizable dents in the deficit this city is trying to bridge.
