We think of negotiations as helping lessen domestic conflict but people once used negotiations to end or smooth transition when a war ends.
The dying can end with temporary autonomy surrounding Kabul. Maybe Chinese peacekeepers, subsidized by the US. Maybe too late for the US to stop making up lies about Iran, Iranian peacekeepers with a vestige stake at preventing compulsory burkas until Kabul became a financial nest egg like Hong Kong to China. The exuberance when Britain returned Hong Kong to China without them destroying the Golden economic Goose should be remembered.

Vietnam toppled the Khmer Rough bloodbath tor less reason than the US did Saddam, who had tried to assassinate a president, otherwise the US is in civil wars.

The march stretched for over 20 blocks at one point,” said UNAC co-coordinator Joe Lomardo, "and featured at least 18 spirited contingents from communities as diverse as immigrant workers, students, trade unions, socialist groups, Muslims, Palestinian, and teachers -- each with their own colorful flags, original banners, drums and chants.

No to imperialist intervention in the Libya! Saudi, UAE troops out of Bahrain!
Support Middle Eastern democracy struggles! End imperialist wars in Iraq, Afghanistan!
On March 17, 2011, the UN Security Council passed a resolution authorising military intervention by the Western imperialist powers or their puppets in Libya. The justification for this is to prevent further loss of life in fighting between forces remaining loyal Muammar Gaddafi and forces supporting the uprising that began on February 15 against his 42-year-old rule, and to support the pro-democracy forces.

While the US may be the world's single super power in military terms, it faces another super power: the voices of war-weary millions who detest violence and killing. In Afghanistan, in the United States, and among the populations of countries whose governments have joined the NATO coalition, millions of people are calling for an end to war in Afghanistan.

Afghans: Victimized by Conflict, Occupation, Extreme Deprivation and Genocide - by Stephen Lendman
In his book "Freedom Next Time," John Pilger used CIA Vietnam terminology calling Afghanistan "the grand illusion of the American cause," describing long-suffering Afghans victimized by conflict, violence, occupation, extreme deprivation and genocide.
A December 15 ICRC press release expressed deep concern about how dire conditions have gotten, their worst ever since America's illegal war of aggression began in October 2001.
Headlined, "Afghanistan: a people trapped between sides," it cited "civilian casualties, internal displacement, and insufficient access to medical care, all of which are occurring against the background of a proliferation of armed groups."

Top Secret: There may be times when host country governments show passivity or indecision in the face of [Taliban/AlQaeeda] subversion ... US Army Intelligence must have the means of launching special operations which will convince host country governments and public opinion of the reality of the insurgent danger ... US Army Intelligence should seek to penetrate the insurgency by means of agents of special assignments, with the task of forming special action groups among the most radical elements of the insurgency.

At first glance Obama is confusing. Some try to solve the contradiction by claiming Obama is a fraud. Others it seems by avoiding the issue of Afghanistan and dwelling instead on other issues.
Before taking office, tensions between the US and Iran were heading toward a US strike. Somehow Obama stopped or at least greatly slowed a nuclear-arms race that would have been started by Iran, with other counties, such as Saudi Arabia, joining in. This without threatening war with Iran, unlike under Bush. Obama even got Russia on board with sanctions, instead of somewhat siding with and somewhat arming Iran. However, in Afghanistan, Obama is jumping into the quicksand. Though there are a few good signs of hope there that most have missed, that I will get into later.
The Johnson Administration started out with a lot of idealism and the Great Society programs, which all went up in smoke because of Vietnam.
