Ten years ago today in Philadelphia, the Student Liberation Action Movement (SLAM) from New York City participated in majority people of color affinity groups in the direct action against the Republican National Convention in 2000. It was a historic moment for the global justice and prison abolition movements! I did 6 audio interviews in the past week and a half and edited them into short segments. Have a listen!

Two charges of conspiracy carrying 5 year maximums still remain, however. Philadelphia recently formed a support committee for the RNC 8 and hosted events around the March 28 National Day of Solidarity with the Eight.

Perhaps the most outrageous hypocrisy of all was claiming that the McCain/Palin ticket would be “taking on” the corrupt Washington Establishment, as though that establishment hadn’t been predominantly Republican for most of the past decade, and as though McCain and Palin hadn’t been an integral part of it.

The Things They Left Behind (or Didn’t Remind You About)

Palin went on to lie about her opponent, Barack Obama’s, tax plan, saying it would raise taxes on businesses and on all Americans. In fact, Obama’s plan calls for lowering the corporate profits tax, while increasing the tax on dividends and capital gains, both of which fall not on businesses but on investors, and for lowering taxes on most Americans, while raising them for people earning over $250,000.

The first day of the Republican National Convention opened in a scaled back version, ostensibly out of respect for the anticipated sufferings in the Gulf Coast Region.

Writing from the RNC

The fat's in the fire kids and the RNC is here. The convention has been floating over my head for the past couple of months, taunting and tempting. But the time is here and it's time to leave.
