We therefore call on President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to stop any “talks of cooperation” with the US government that will inevitably lead to a disadvantaged position for the country. Although we support his steadfast support for Philippine sovereignty in the face of continued Chinese military incursions in the West Philippine Sea, we believe that enforcing our sovereignty does not mean our country must willingly bow down to the interest of another superpower.

With pride as a people, we commemorate a historic national event this coming September 16, the rejection of the US military bases twenty years ago
It was the culmination of decades of struggle against the offenses and abuses committed by US troops against our women and our people. Finding refuge in their military bases, these military offenders were shielded by extra-territoriality privileges beyond the jurisdiction of our criminal laws and justice system. More seriously, these bases enhanced US interference in our country’s economy and politics, and were used as staging points of US aggression in Vietnam.
The votes of the Magnificent 12 were a historic assertion of our people’s sovereignty and a declaration that our territory will never more be used to advance US economic and military interests in the Asian region.

Upon assuming office a year ago, President Benigno S. Aquino III declared that the government was ready to resume peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Communist National Democratic Front (NDF) without pre-condition and repeated it in his first State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA).
The never-give-up policy of the government in the peace process is paying off.
The MILF and the NDF welcomed the announcement of the President that set the stage for resuming formal peace talks to end the 40-year insurgency war in the country.
During the resumption of formal negotiations between the government and the NDF in Oslo, Norway on Feb.15-21, 2011, both sides expressed optimism that a peace pact would be signed in 2012. Another round of negotiations was held last April.
The Royal Government of Norway is the third-party facilitator in the negotiations between the Philippine government and the NDF.

Party of the Laboring Masses (PLM) | 06.22.2011
The Party of the Laboring Masses - Philippines condemns any actions that increase military tensions in the region and contribute to a regional military conflict, by countries that lay claim to the Spratly Islands. We are opposed to any sabre-rattling and stand for a negotiated, political settlement, of the disputed claims to the area. Therefore we deplore China’s strong-arm tactics and bullying, which undermines efforts towards a peaceful, political settlement, of the disputed claims.
The Spratly Islands, less than four-square kilometres of land area spread over 425,000 square kilometres of sea and usually submerged under water, probably have strategic importance fuelling the numerous territorial disputes. The area holds significant reserves of oil and natural gas: reportedly some 17.7 billion tons of oil and natural gas reserves, larger than the 13 billion tons held by Kuwait, thus making it the fourth largest reserve bed in the world. In an energy hungry world, these reserves intensify the disputed claims over the area. Due to clashes over claims on the islands, no successful exploration of the area has as yet been successfully undertaken.

Akbayan (Citizens Action Party) to Chinese Gov’t: Stop military bullying in Spratlys
Akbayan today stormed the Chinese Consulate Office in Makati in response to the series of military incursions by the Chinese government in territories claimed by the Philippines in the Western Philippine Sea in the past few months.
Akbayan Representative Walden Bello who led the protest denounced the provocative acts of the Chinese government, which he described as blatant bullying.
The progressive legislator also reminded the Chinese government of its commitment to pursue the peaceful resolution of the conflict in the Western Philippine Sea through diplomatic means.
