Police Tactics

As Occupy Philly comes to terms with the recent police violence, I can almost hear the white radicals gloating that they were right: "see the police are NOT our friends after all".
Silly I say, but more like dangerous.

First off, the white radicals, and I count myself as one, studied and maybe experienced, as I have, the painful history of police violence, so they were right about one thing: police have used violence against peaceful protesters in the past and there's no reason to assume they won't do so again. So in a way, they were right all along. But I think the "police are NOT our friends" idea is just as a shallow, divisive, and dangerous as thinking police actually are our friends. Here's why.

Only weeks ago, a reporter from the right-wing American Spectator Magazine boasted of his 'efforts' at Washington's Smithsonian Museum, efforts which many argue led to the pepper spraying of innocent Occupy demonstrators, and Occupy's initial blame for his actions. But infiltration, subversion, and agents provocateur have a history of being used against dissident groups.
Occupy Facing ’Cloaked’ Counterattacks

Last week it emerged that the New York Police Department seems to have developed a new tactic against Occupy – encouraging those among New York City’s ‘darker side’ to “take it to Zuccotti”, according to a report first appearing in the NY Daily News. Of course, all those opposed to Occupy’s courageous efforts have tried to paste unflattering labels on the protesters from the start, and since there’s nothing dark or sinister about these good folks, it seems they had to find some that fit that description.

Yesterday police raided the Occupy Oakland encampment. One protester, an Iraq War veteran was hit in the face with a tear gas canister. Legal observers and media were kept away from the raid.
Yesterday police violently raided the Occupy Oakland encampment in California. This first video shows a protester, an Iraq Veteran, getting hit in the face with a tear gas canister.
When other protesters came to the aid of the victim, this video shows clearly an Oakland police officer throwing concussion grenades at the people who come to the aid of the person who was hit in the face with the hot, dangerous tear gas canister.
This is maybe some of the worst footage I've seen of police violence at a protest:

This is an in-depth analysis of the neighborhood based Peoples Court movement which emerged in September in response to the near death beating of Askia Sabur.
The black working class is currently leading the way in the development of new forms of revolutionary organization in Philadelphia. This is reflected in the community based People’s Courts that formed in response to the near death beating of Askia Sabur in West Philadelphia on September 3rd, 2010. Askia had not complied with police orders to leave a street corner as he was waiting for his food at a Chinese store in his community, on 55th and Lansdowne.

Read copies of secretive newsletter: “Extremist Watch”, published for animal researchers and law enforcement
Voice of the Voiceless has been leaked copies of a little-known PA-based newsletter for animal researchers called Extremist Watch. The publication prints intelligence on the animal rights movement, including activists home addresses, who is dating who, details about the personal lives of activists, and much more.
Little-seen outside of private animal researcher and law enforcement circles, I am making two issues of Extremist Watch available publicly for the first time.

Checkpoint response | 02.04.2010
As with other holidays and large events, law enforcement agencies use the pretext to heighten enforcement of classist, racist, and anti-immigrant laws. This weekend will see numerous checkpoints, as well as non-checkpoint traffic enforcement. Checkpoint response brings you this warning of the foreseeable checkpoints, and urges the utmost caution on the road.

Some people may think FBI surveillance consists of an agent dressed in a black suit who follows someone around on foot or in a black car. However, past FBI surveillance is quite different from what some people may think it is.
