"Philadelphia Libraries Closing October 2nd - All Of Them"

"The Pennsylvania State Senate was unable to pass a budget this last week, which may result in the mandatory closing of all Philadelphia public libraries come October 2.
No public officials have set a potential reopening time for the libraries, but NBC Philadelphia has been quick to point out the social ramifications of the State Senate's failure:

No access to the Internet for low-income earners

Cancellation of after-school educational programs in libraries

GED and ESL programs discontinued

Obviously, no free books, magazines or movies

On Thursday, August 27 the Coalition to Save the Libraries held a protest outside of City Council's chambers in City Hall. The protest was called under the auspice of the Coalition’s opposition to City Council for waiving its power to hold a hearing and vote on Nutter's “doomsday” budget, with which he threatens to cut 3,000 city jobs and many services. But the Coalition’s real nature, not as an opponent to library closures, but as an opponent to the struggle for self determination and reparations to the African community, was exposed. During the press conference/protest, Coalition to Save the Libraries organizer Zachary Hershman approached International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement organizers demanding that we take down our signs that challenge Nutter’s war budget that spends billions on police and prisons that attack the African community.

The budget crisis is real. The only viable and relatively painless solution is to accept the original proposal of a one-half of one percent (0.5%) state personal income tax increase.

Dear fellow Democrats,

We are writing to you for your help. Our letter is  not at  the bidding of the governor or the party leadership.  We are  officers, committee people and volunteers of the  Democratic  Party, but we write to you as Democrats.

We believe that our state is facing a serious financial  crisis that could result in thousands of layoffs,  abandonment of Pennsylvanians who desperately need vital  health and social services, and long term trends that will  plunge this state into greater levels of poverty and  inadequate services than we have ever witnessed.

Uhuru Movement leader Diop Olugbala brutally attacked by police & arrested for protesting Nutter's budget at 3/19 City Council session:

by

On Wednesday, March 19, 2009, police attacked members of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement (InPDUM) in the gallery of the City Council during the City Council session where Mayor Nutter was announcing his 2010 budget. International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement members were holding signs protesting Mayor Nutter’s budget, which cuts essential services for the African population while spending more than one billion dollars a year for police and prisons attacking the black community. Subsequent to the police attack, InPDUM international organizer Diop Olugbala, (aka Wali Rahman), and member Shabaka Mnombatha, (aka Franklin Moses), were brutally arrested and are being charged with aggravated assault on police!

Last week, Mayor Nutter presented another round of budget cuts that represent a continued attack on the poor and working people of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia_Skyline.jpg

Last week, Mayor Nutter presented another round of budget cuts that represent a continued attack on the poor and working people of Philadelphia. Along with these proposed cuts, Nutter's office announced a series of town hall meetings -- meetings that are being sold to the public as places to be heard and for our input to be taken into account. Yet, the Mayor's meetings and the media coverage of this moment has not spelled out the very human effects the proposed budget cuts will have on our lives.
