Submitted by jon peppers (not verified) on Wed, 12/02/2009 - 5:20pmdo you REALLY align yourself with some of these groups? As to education, much has been done for those who cannot afford college. As to elementary education, teachers are not baby sitters and the PARENTS are responsible to make SURE their children do the work at home. No homework, check with the teacher. Health care...just walk into any ER. As to the Military, I would not second guess those in the field and, in my opinion, well---I think you know that. I'm just a little taken back that you, as a veteran, appear to have such...well...bitterness...no offence intended, just trying to understand where you are coming from.
I believe these groups would better serve the community and Country by getting involved in the communities as to living conditions ie: drugs, domestic issues, single parent syndrome, AIDS etc. Again, just my opinion.

The choice
Submitted by Rich Gardner on Wed, 12/02/2009 - 9:56pmback during the build-up to the Iraq War was to sit around and do nothing (I had already written letters to the editor and to my Congresspeople) or to go on protests with groups like ANSWER. Yes, I was aware that ANSWER had a lot of communists, etc., in their ranks, but I didn't feel that just sitting around was a tolerable option. There are obviously exceptions of course, but in general I just don't feel that the antiwar movement has the luxury of being picky about who we choose to ally ourselves with.
As to volunteering to help out on a personal level, that's a great thing to do and I respect that, but America saw social progress get sidetracked and saw it get the life sucked out of it during and because of the Vietnam War. I'd like to see us not have a recurrence of that.
