ONE LIFE CREW SHOW STILL ON FOR JUN 6 AT FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH

by

Hatemongering band is still going to perfom in Philly, despite earlier reports that the show was canceled by the venue.

Well, we said that if One Life Crew was going to have their shows they will have to go through some anti-racist hoops, and sure enough the hoops are in position. It looks like that despite earlier reports, their show at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia is going on as planned on June 6 and that is not going over well with some folks. To that end, the flyer seen here (which you can right-click and save in full size) is doing the rounds both there and in OLC's hometown of Cleveland. As of right now, official plans haven't been made for protests, but they are being made, so we will give you details as we go along. Philly is going to be especially fun with the possibility of Keystone State "Skinheads" showing up. Such is how it goes when you have a scene where fenewalkers crawl around like cockroaches, but that doesn't mean absolutely no one will say or do anything about it.

PHILADELPHIA, PA--Anti-racist activists in are incensed that a racist, homophobic and sexist band will still be allowed to hold their reunion show as scheduled.

Originally Cleveland's One Life Crew was reported to have lost the show at the First Unitarian Church slated for June 6, but after promoters met with church head Rev. Nate Walker the show was back on. According to antifa working to oppose the show, Rev. Walker had been told that at one point the band did promote such an agenda, but was not doing so any longer.

"Reverend Nate said he will be more than willing to act as a mediator and would support a demonstration against the show, but the Unitarian Church does not censor its tenants," an activist from Philadelphia Anti-Racist Action (ARA) said.

In addition to a rather sorted history that includes getting dropped from their label because of a race riot they instigated at one of their shows, a main issue with One Life Crew has been their following among neo-Nazis, particularly given their split 7" record with white power band Empire Falls. According to a flyer being distributed by antifa, Keith Carney of Keystone State "Skinheads" (KSS) even considers the band among his favorites and may make the show at the church. "The only thing that's gonna stop these shows is the band itself," the flyer notes him saying on the KSS discussion board.

The June 5 show in Cleveland at Peabody's Café is also expected to go on as planned, but local antifa there are distributing the same flyer.

Response from Rev. Nate Walker

I understand that you received a mass email from the Trenton Anti-Racist Action group (TARA). I have deep sympathy for their efforts and agree with their goals and remain hopeful that we can minister to their deep seeded pain. After multiple pastoral phone calls with TARA, tending to their difficult emotions, we have gone through deliberate discussions as a staff and with those hosting the concert. I'd like to use this email to share with you the context of the situation, to describe our current strategy and to get your advice.

Context: R5 Productions is one of our long-term tenants and because of their success the church was recently featured by Rolling Stones as one the most successful Punk Rock venues in the country. As a result, we have many, many bands come in and out of the church, some of which are controversial. All the concerts are drug- and alcohol-free, but there have been times where violence has occurred. R5 Productions has a very strong staff and when conflict is anticipated they hire additional uniformed security and contact the local police, which they have done in this case. In addition, R5 researched One Life Crew and demonstrated that the concern is not with the band itself but with its potential attendees. For example, in the past One Life Crew held a concert attended by a/some members of a group called KSS, a nationalist group from Pennsylvania that is known for its "white power". As an organization, KSS has never attended concerts of One Life Crew and if any individual members attend our church and cause violence they will be immediately dealt with by professional security and/or the police. Unfortunately, TARA is deliberately provoked as a marketing strategy, aware that TARA will send these kinds of mass emails, which brings more attention to the concert and eventually sells more tickets. As staff of the church we have sought to listen to all sides, to research the context and to set clear boundaries. The first being the fact that R5 productions is ultimately responsible for their own bookings and have demonstrated the ability to professionally manage equally contentious situations in the past. The second being that our church stands for the principles of democracy, one being freedom of speech and to uniformly stand against those who promote hate-speech.

Strategy: Therefore, rather than choose to censor bands hosted by R5 Productions, we have offered to work with Trenton Anti-Racist Action to create a civic process that will get us all talking about racism and homophobia. I believe that this conflict is a powerful opportunity to minister together. Here are some concrete examples that make up our strategy. (1) To date, we have invited One Life Crew to meet with me and a camera crew to talk about racism, homophobia and the difference between free-speech and hate-speech. The ministerial philosophy is simple: racism and homophobia is healed by being in relationship; therefore, by meeting with an openly gay minister who is in an interracial relationship there may be opportunity for moral and spiritual growth on all sides. (2) We are willing to work with Trenton Anti-Racist Action to demonstrate with them against any actions that KSS have taken and publicly witness against hate-speech. We hope to work with other members of the community and area congregations to stand against oppression. (3) Our primary concern is about safety, therefore we have been working with R5 to ensure that adequate measures are being taken. We will do everything in our power to create a secure, safe and healthy setting in order to publicly engage in some of the most morally challenging issues of our time.

In closing, know that this strategy is built upon the legacy of those who came before. Our congregation's first settled minister, William Furness had armed guards at his side while he preached his abolitionist message before and during the Civil War. What courage it took to stand face to face to those slave owners in his congregation and to take such risks. I believe now is the time, more than ever, not to shrink from controversy but to courageously use this conflict as an opportunity for ministry.

Advice: What do you think of this strategy? Do you have any advice? If so, please call my cell phone - my preferred form of communication. Rather than mass emails, let's have a dialogue and if needed we can arrange a conference call so others can chime in. I respect you all and look forward to your input.

Peace,
Nate

The facts are very simple

This is some b*llshit already. Reverend Nate has totally misstated ARA's position on this subject: One Life Crew *IS* the problem. The fact that neo-Nazi groups like the Keystone State Skinheads will be in attendance just adds more credence to our argument about what type of band OLC is and what type of people they will attract to the Unitarian Church.

The facts are simple here people:

* One Life Crew is a racist, homophobic band;
* R5 Productions rents space from the First Unitarian Church, a supposed progressive organization;
and
* The UU Church is blatantly allowing this show to go on, instead passing the blame onto R5 Productions, when the church itself can easily stop R5 from having this show (as Reverend Nate stated himself in multiple conversations with ARA members)

R5 is at fault here for attempting to bring a scumbag band like OLC to Philadelphia, BUT the UU Church is also at fault here for allowing hate speech to happen on their premises, and not doing anything about it except babbling on about communication and healing and pulling every liberal card they possible can to counter ARA's arguments about the show, its sponsors and its venue.

ENOUGH ALREADY!

The UU Church is supposed to a safe place for everyone. There are consequences to allowing a show like this go. For instance, has the UU leadership thought about all the young people that attend these shows? Are they going to be responsible when someone decides to follow through on this band's lyrics and jump queer people or people of color? Do they really want to have that on their conscience?

The answer is simple here - cancel the show. No, it won't end homophobia or racism, but it will send a strong message about your stance on these subjects, and show people that Philadelphia will not stand for this kind of b*llshit!

Reverend Nate says he wants to hear from people, and get their advice, so:

KEEP CALLING!! TELL HIM TO SHUT THIS SHOW DOWN!
