A New Era for Philadelphia

by

On Wednesday afternoon, the Unified Taxi Workers Alliance (UTWA) held a pre-Labor Day rally with taxi driver, labor, student, and community leaders from around the city and beyond. Since the unification of the Taxi Workers Alliance of Pennsylvania and the Unified Brotherhood of Drivers and Owner-Operators last month, UTWA organizers have been calling this a “new era in taxi driver organizing.” As speaker after speaker at the airport rally testified to the importance of the drivers’ struggle and the power of their organizing vision, it became clear that a new era for taxi driver organizing in fact ushers in a new era for all Philadelphians who care about dignified working conditions, livable wages, and accessible health care, as well as decent education, affordable housing, access to the internet and other related issues.
