Hi,

Nationally, the first ever report on the uniform industry is being released. The report reveals serious human rights and labor violations of garment workers who work at twelve factories, in nine countries, who have been producing for eight major uniform brands. The report is based on specific case studies of person to person interviews researched by local non-profit human rights and labor rights organizations with expertise in factory monitoring, and knowledge of the local language and culture.

Activists in Philadelphia will be holding a press conference and hand delivering this report  to Governor Rendell's Office in Philadelphia on July 1st, at 10:30am.

The link to the report: http://www.sweatfree.org/subsidizing, please be noted that it is embargoed till July 1st.

Governors Must Do More to End Tax Dollar Support for Sweatshops, New Study Says

JOBS WITH JUSTICE will unite with state employees, Pennsylvania taxpayers, and a major nationwide coalition on July 1st to demand that Governor Rendell stop allocating taxpayer dollars to state employee uniforms produced by sweatshop labor.

On July 1st, Human rights advocates will hand-deliver a first-of-its-kind report on the uniform apparel industry to Governor Rendell. The report includes in-depth case studies—revealing serious human rights and labor violations—of 13 factories in nine countries that produce uniforms for public employees such as police officers, firefighters, and correctional officers. Some of these factories produce goods for companies that supply the state of Pennsylvania.

"I understand that Governor Rendell had been a leader in the pass by signing the Anti-Sweatshop Procurement Policy, Executive Order 2004-4 in 2004. However, the uniform industry report shows that Governor Rendell is not doing enough in Pennsylvania to stop our taxpayer dollars support for sweatshops," says Amy McAuliffe from Pennsylvania Fair Trade Coalition.

Anti-Sweatshop activists will deliver hundreds of petitions, along with the Uniform Industry Report to Governor Rendell's Office on July 1st to urge Governor Rendell to take the next step to stop tax dollar support for sweatshops.

"I want to ensure that Governor Rendell becomes a national leader in the anti-sweatshop movement. We want him to join the State and Local Government Consortium, to ensure that garment workers who make our public employees uniform do work under humane conditions," says Temple University United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) member Quyen Ngyuen.
