In The Middle of the Whirlwind
A Talk on the Current State of compositions of Movements and Struggles circulating the United States and across the Planet
With The Team Colors Collective

Our goal with this project is to inquire into and map some the current winds. Accordingly, we begin and end with one question: "Will you join us in the middle of a whirlwind?"

A meaningful and substantial answer to the above question is not to be found within these pages, nor is it found in rhetoric or posturing. The answer to this question is found on the barricades, and in the streets, fields, forests, gardens, homes, farms, community centers, workplaces and neighborhoods where we struggle everyday to create new worlds and new lives, together. Our small whirlwinds become tornados only in and through activity.

Whirlwinds is intended as an "intervention," accomplished in form and content through an "inquiry" into contemporary movement; this project is not intended to be a comprehensive map of "the movement" or a 'snapshot' of movements. We don't feel that it is possible to create a comprehensive inquiry into social struggles in the United States. However, many small inquiries are necessary and possible, and in summation such efforts help us all to understand the terrain on which we can build and intensify our collective resistance.

Our major strategic aim is for Whirlwinds to serve as a point of discussion of movement strengths and weaknesses, as well as movement purposes, tactics and theories. We hope that this project assists those who read it to better understand current struggles for liberation, and that this understanding helps build strategies for building movements capable of "winning."

In the middle of a whirlwind: 2008 Convention protests, Movement and Movements is a one-off Online Journal of theory, practice, art, activism and organzing. Coordinated by Team Colors Militant Research Collective and Published by the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. This event will include a brief presentation on the journal and the themes addressed within it, followed by a discussion. For info on the journal: www.inthemiddleofawhirlwind.info

Of Friends and Whirlwinds:

'Of Friends and Whirlwinds: Inquiry and Radical Organizing for Movement Capable of Building New Social Relations' brings together three different organizers under the theme of radical organizing, and for the purpose of movement building. By explaining the purposes, process and function of particular organizing efforts in context of building sustained radicalmovement, we hope to deepen thinking of political organizing through an emphasis on a practice that takes everyday power relations -- as well as larger institutions of oppression and exploitation -- as central targets.

On May 25, 2008 Team Colors Collective and Journal of Aesthetics and Protest Press released a one-off online journal entitled 'In the Middle of a Whirlwind: 2008 Convention Protests, Movement and Movements' ("Whirlwinds"). Whirlwinds was heavily inspired by experiences with radical organizing over the past decade within the "counter-globalization" movements in the U.S. and, on theoretical levels, "inquiries" into "class composition" that are most well known as central parts of the "autonomist Marxist" tradition. The presentation on Whirlwinds will address recent movement in the U.S., and the meaning of inquiry and analysis of class composition for movement building, as well as some of the more salient themes of the Whirlwinds project and the lessons it might teach us.

Philly's Pissed and Philly Stands Up are groups working against sexual assault in radical communities in Philadelphia. Philly's Pissed provides support to survivors of sexual assault; Philly Stands Up works primarily with people who have sexually assaulted, trying to help them take accountability for their actions and change their behavior. Timothy (Philly's Pissed) and Jenna (Philly Stands Up) will discuss the work done by Philly's Pissed and Philly Stands Up, addressing the challenges of organizing around sexual assault as well as its significance for movement-building.
