Open Letter to Obama for America Campaign

We call on Mr. Obama to recognize UN Resolutions 194 and 242, as the basis for a just peace in the Middle East.
Dear Mr. Obama and Campaign Staff:
I am troubled by Mr. Obama's recent statements on the Israel-Palestine conflict, including his refutation of United Nations Resolutions 194 and 242.
Mr. Obama has taken the untenable position that Jerusalem shall remain the "undivided" capital of Israel.
United Nations Resolution 242 has made this issue clear. The West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem are occupied territory and must be vacated under international law. Those who wish to see a secure future for Israelis and Palestinians alike must work to achieve a just peace that recognizes Palestinian sovereignty.
Mr. Obama has also failed to acknowledge United Nations Resolution 194 by saying that "any agreement with the Palestinian people must preserve Israel's identity as a Jewish state."
Resolution 194 recognizes the right of all refugees to choose to return to their homes or seek compensation for their losses. Israel, as a member of the United Nations, has the legal right to exist, and to live in security and peace. It does not, however, have the right to ignore the rights of refugees under international law as a means of maintaining its ethnic or religious composition.
I hope that the Obama campaign will take the proper steps to support a just peace in the Middle East.
Thank you.
