The Great Debaters

In 1935 the debating team from Wiley College, a small black university in eastern Texas, rose to nation prominence with its sharp incisive debating skills and a long string of victories over other teams, many from all white schools. Along the way the team members and their professor coach Melvin B. Tolson, portrayed by Denzel Washington, endure the racial insults, intimidation and acts of gruesome violence that were the hallmark of Jim Crow in the south. Internecine quarrels and family struggles are also well dramatized by an excellent cast that includes, Forrest Whitaker, Denzel Whitaker (not related), Jurnee Smollett and Nate Parker.
