250 FIFTH-GRADERS TO PARADE AT FELTONVILLE INTERMEDIATE ON JUNE 4, 2008

June 4th Parade to Celebrate the School’s Diversity and Mark the End of Year-Long Collaborations between Youth and Spiral Q Puppet Theater

PHILADELPHIA—On Wednesday, June 4, hundreds of children and their supporters will march through the streets of North Philadelphia for the culmination of the Lifting Our Cultures and Families collaboration between Spiral Q Puppet Theater and Feltonville Intermediate. This culminating parade was originally set for May

WHAT:    The finale parade of the Lifting Our Cultures and Families project will take place on June 4, 2008. Hundreds of signs and banners will join 30 giant puppets made by Feltonville students over the course of the school year.

WHEN:    Wednesday, June 4, 2008 (Rain Date set for Thursday, June 5)

WHERE:    Feltonville Intermediate, 230 Wyoming Ave., Philadelphia PA 19120

WHO:     250 Fifth Graders, Teachers, and Administrators of Feltonville Intermediate will join teaching artists and staff from Spiral Q Puppet Theater for this massive celebration in the streets of North Philadelphia.

WHY:    The Lifting Our Cultures and Families project addresses recent shifts in the school and Feltonville neighborhood: changing demographics and resulting tensions have been reflected in the classroom. Feltonville’s student body increased by 50% in the last two years, and faculty, staff and families saw an immediate need to creatively engage students in addressing such radical change. This parade will display the fruits of their labor to the Feltonville community. FULL DETAILS IN ATTACHED PRESS RELEASE.

VISUALS:    Paraders will carry colorful banners, signs and over 30 giant puppets made by Feltonville students under the supervision of Spiral Q artists. Photographers and media members with video cameras should position themselves along the parade route (see www.spiralq.org for parade route and details).
