Dear Bush Resister:

Last year progressive groups in the Philadelphia area led by World Can't Wait held a very successful Impeachment Town Hall Meeting at the First Unitarian Church. Tragically, the number of reasons to impeach Bush and Cheney have only grown since then. But so has the pro-impeachment movement nationwide.

In March 2006, following the lead of dozens of smaller local governments, the City Council of San Francisco passed a resolution recommending the impeachment of George Bush for destroying civil liberties and his negligent response to Hurricane Katrina. In March 2007 the City Council of Detroit voted in favor of impeaching both Bush and Cheney.

In April 2007 the State Legislature of Vermont passed a resolution demanding impeachment of both. That same month Congressman Dennis Kucinich proposed H.R. 333 on the floor of the House calling for the impeachment of Cheney. That bill has 25 sponsors and is currently under consderation by the House Judiciary Committee. And as recent as February 4, 2008 the City Council of Binghamton, NY (pop: 250,000+) voted to urge Congress to impeach the president and vice president. These are just a few examples of the hundreds of elected officials, state legislatures, statewide political committees, state legislative districts, cities, towns, and counties that have passed resolutions calling for impeachment. (See the full list at http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/resolutions-list).

Should Philadelphia be added to this list? World Can't Wait thinks it should. Here's why:

-As the sixth largest city in the nation, Philadelphia would be by far the largest city to officially support impeachment. If the City Council passed a resolution it would get media attention nationwide. The more people hear about impeachment and talk about impeachment the more pressured the Democrats in Congress will feel to discussing it and voting on it.

Impeachment of Bush and/or Cheney would make it more difficult for them to pass more harmful legislation at the end of their tenure but more importantly it would hold criminals accountable for egregious crimes and would give hope to the vast majority of the world who have watched this administration either actively or through negligence take advantage of prisoners, Iraqis, Afghanis, US soldiers, the American middle class and poor, victims of Katrina, and the entire world through environmental destruction.

Impeachment would have an impact even if Bush and Cheney were not ultimately removed from office because it would at least allow their crimes to be officially and publicly brought to light. -Since Philadelphia was the location where the Constitution was signed and the process of impeachment was made law, the passing of a resolution here would have enormous symbolic significance.

This is another reason why a resolution here would get national attention. -It is very likely that a majority of Philadelphians support impeachment. 80% of registered voters voted against Bush's reelection in 2004. According to a 2005 voting study, Philadelphia is the third-most liberal city in the country with a population over 1,000,000 (http://www.govpro.com/News/Article/31439/). Representative Bob Brady is one of the sponsors of H.R. 333. Given these facts it would be easy to collect signatures and recruit people to a resolution campaign. If you believe impeachment is urgent and possible please join our campaign to get a resolution passed in the Philadelphia City Council. We will meet on February 26th at 7:00 PM at the Friends Center at 1501 Race Street to make our preliminary plans . We will be composing a petition to collect signatures and discussing how we will contact council members. We are looking forward to getting this campaign started quickly.
