Justice For Local Immigrant Jiang Zhen Xing

by

Jiang Zhen Xing, a Philadelphia mother who miscarried second trimester twins following a brutal deportation attempt in February 2006, was granted political asylum this week by a New York judge. Her husband, Tian Xiao Zhang, still has an asylum case pending and has a hearing at the end of the month.

In February 2006, Mrs. Jiang suffered a violent deportation attempt where she was denied adequate food, water and medical attention, and subsequently miscarried her second trimester twins. The incident galvanized Philadelphia’s Asian American community to demand justice for Mrs. Jiang. Since February, the Justice for Jiang Zhen Xing Campaign has worked to bring national and international attention to the case and build grassroots awareness and support for humane and pro-family immigration laws.

Helen Gym, coordinator of the Campaign, said the community "cautiously" celebrated with the family. With Mr. Zhang's case still pending, Ms. Gym said that it was critical the U.S. government approve his application for asylum. "Otherwise another tragedy will be revisited upon a family that has already suffered so much," Gym said.

She said she hoped the ruling would encourage the government to reaffirm its commitment to an immigration system that supported families and human rights.

Jimmy Chang, a member of the Fujianese community who supported the family, said that many people in the community were suffering under difficult immigration policies. "It's very hard out there for so many people," Mr. Chang said.

The Justice for Jiang Zhen Xing Campaign was sponsored by Asian Americans United, a 20-year old community organization serving Philadelphia's Asian American communities. For more information, please contact Ellen Somekawa, 215-873-3902, or Helen Gym, 215-808-1400.
