NIM conducts18th Annual Assembly
by
Sandy Fulton & Rich Gardner | 06.08.2007
On Thursday evening, June 7, at the annual banquet of Neighborhood Interfaith Movement--one of Philadelphia's most active peace and justice ecumenical organizations--two members of Delaware Valley Veterans for America were given awards for continual efforts to end the war in Iraq.
Sandy Fulton, a member of VVAW since 1969, was chosen as one of them, for her activism and her work as Director of Graphics for DVVFA's "Sea of Tombstones". The other was Rich Gardner, DVVFA's webmaster and, although retired from the Navy on a medical disability, a tireless activist.

These two Navy vets are also heavily
involved in the Social Justice
Ministries in their churches, which include actions against the war.
Sandy's a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the
Restoration (UUCR) and Rich
belongs to the First United Methodist
Church of Germantown (FUMCOG),
both well-known for activism on local,
national and world issues. Gold Star mother Celeste Zappala is a member
of FUMCOG, and this year's large class of UUCR high school youth have
been learning the well-guarded secrets of avoiding military
recruitment, including CO status, with help from Vietnam and Iraq
veterans in DVVFA.

Turns out
that George Herold, the fellow with white hair and glasses in the
center of the top picture, is the Vice-Chairperson of NIM,
so it was an honor for me to receive my award straight from him.
I was mulling over any comments I might be expected to make, but
as the time got closer, I figured that I would have been informed.
Turns out I was right and I wasn't expected to say anything.
