Radical Christian Band Performs at South Philadelphia Church

by

Friday, August 11: A self-described "nomadic tribe" of Christian musicians called "Psalters" performed Friday night at the North Philadelphia Circle of Hope Fellowship. Psalters also performed earlier this month at the fourth annual Anarchism and Christianity conference, organized by the online community jesusradicals.com. Below are pictures of that performance. The name Psalters comes the temple musicians who first performed the psalms over three thousand years ago -- seeking to unite music witih prayer. "We also desire to make tehillim (psalms)," says the young group's Manifesto. "We too pray to be psalters rather than musicians."

Their ecstatic style blends punk rock and prayer calls, invoking with both the once and future world of reconnected, renewed humanity.

Psalters is an affiliated project of the Mennonite Central Committee, and works in solidarity with the Circle of Hope Fellowship, a network of Philadelphia congregations that operates in a decentralized, responsive fashion.
