Philly March Against Bioweapons Tues 6/21
by
BioDemocracy | 06.18.2005
We cannot be silent as Monsanto, the military and other BIO members meet in Center City to promote a new Manhattan Project. We must resist the development of bio-weapons: like nuclear weapons, their very existence is a threat and a crime against humanity. For the sake of our poisoned earth and threatened future, we call on people of peace to raise their voice of opposition and resistance and to join us on Tuesday, June 21!
STOP U.S. BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS DEVELOPMENT!
TUESDAY JUNE 21
11AM, WASHINGTON SQUARE, PHILADELPHIA (6th and Locust Streets)
NO WAR! NO BIOWEAPONS!
The United States government is and has been one of the most aggressive purveyors of biological weaponry in world history. From the distribution of smallpox blankets to indigenous peoples in the 19th century to today's Homeland Security-funded "Project Bioshield" producing genetically engineered viruses in the midst of our communities, the proliferation of these horrific weapons continues. Even as the victims of Monsanto's "Agent Orange" defoliant, which was showered on southeast Asia in the 1960s and '70s, await reparations for their devastated countryside, the Bush administration schemes to unleash "Agent Green" on Colombia, a weaponized fungus designed to destroy coca plants but guaranteed to wreak havoc on fragile tropical ecosystems. Billions in taxpayer dollars are spent each year on dozens of laboratories here in the United States, like the one at Thomas Jefferson University in Center City and nearby Fort Detrick in Maryland, where huge stores of infectious diseases are manufactured, stored and genetically enhanced - allegedly for no other reason than to cure them.
We demand:
* An end to Project Bioshield.
* An end to the production, testing, use and storage of biological weapons.
* Renewal by the US of the Biological and Toxic Weapons Convention (BTWC)
* Ratification of the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification
* Reparations for civilian victims of past US chemical attacks in Vietnam, Iraq, Colombia and other countries, and for criminal sanctions against the government officials and corporations who authorized and carried out those attacks.
The June 21st March Against Wars and Bio-Weapons is called for and endorsed by the Brandywine Peace Community, United for Peace and Justice, the BioDemocracy Mobilization, and the Philadelphia Regional Anti-War Network (PRAWN).
