12:00 Noon Saturday 30 April 2011

The May Day USA Education Committee is celebrating our labor heritage and our need to appreciate and continue the policies which have allowed workers to live lives of fulfillment and honor. The event is sponsored by PA Labor History Society (PLHS) and Philadelphia Area Project on Occupational Safety and Health (PhilaPOSH).
There will be music and entertainment for kids of all ages and a barbecue picnic.
We will award the Aggie Moran Human Rights Award to workers, individuals and groups that are working to improve society. Specific awardees are:

  • Asian Americans United
  • Reverend Chester H. Williams
  • Philadelphia Unemployment Project
  • Cheri Honkala

The day will be led off by the spirited rhythms of the West Powelton Drum Squad, followed by the folk/blues music of Andy, Antipin, the hip-hop of Tha Truth, the Hispanic hip-hop of Legendario, the rap of K&A Mob, the poet Celeste Preston and the rap of Ray Cassey. There will also be “open mike” where, inspired by the spirit of the day, participants can express their thoughts on this special day.
We'll have “Puppets” from SpiralQ around the site.
Speakers will include the

  • Elmwood Park Community Organizer Cathy Brady
  • Pedro Rodriguez of the Philadelphia Civil Service Commission
  • President of the local Transport Workers Union 234 John Johnson

We will ask for a free-will offering of whatever audience members can afford.
