On March 20th West Chester University Students for a Democratic Society gathered to protest the sixth anniversary of the war in Iraq. We met at the Sykes Student Union building at four o’clock with a few members of the Chester County Peace Movement, War Resisters League, and Veterans for Peace.
Three campus police also met us there, but they didn’t do much but stand around and talk to each other.
We held banners that read “Education, Not Occupation”, “Free Gaza”, and “Free Palestine”. There were peace flags and black flags, and creative signs made by students.
After gathering we marched the five blocks up to the Chester County Courthouse. Here we were met by one police officer, who told us we couldn’t use the megaphone, and several counter-protesters from the ultra-nationalist right-wing group American Sheepdogs.
After members of SDS read speeches and yelled chants, we walked around the block and disbanded.
On March 21st Buddhist Peace Walk for A New Spring came through our town on their three month walk from Leverett, MA — Washington, DC. At four o’clock they met with Chester County Peace Movement at the Courthouse for their weekly vigil. There were only about five members of the American Sheepdogs there to counter the event. The Peace Walkers had a vegan diner at a local Friends Meeting House and early in the morning the next day they left for their next stop on the way to the Capital to send their message of peace to the politicians.
Also on the 21st, several members went down to DC to join the ANSWER anti-war rally.
The several events were all peaceful and no arrests were made. There was a lot of media coverage of the events. The SDS event got a front page picture and the Peace Walkers got a big picture and article in the Daily Local News.

Would it be too much to ask for some original signs instead of the same tired cliches?
Drop the Iraq signs. That war is over, we won.
Typical
Submitted by Rich Gardner on Thu, 03/26/2009 - 11:49amfor a conservative to interpret "fight" as only meaning organized violence. And obviously, the humanitarian crisis there means nothing to you.
BTW, the US did not "win" in Iraq. The Iraqis have denied our oil companies contracts to drill there. US troops are being sent home despite the fact that Bush wanted to keep them there forever.
So I WAS NOT a War For Oil, Thanks For Clearing That Up
