Two senior officials at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. are departing Aug. 13 after busy but relatively brief stints at the government agency responsible for cleaning up failed banks.

Michael Bradfield, the agency’s general counsel, and Joseph Jiampietro, a senior adviser for markets, both plan to leave next Friday. Mr. Bradfield joined the FDIC in May 2009, and Mr. Jiampietro joined in March 2009.

Mr. Bradfield is a longtime Washington banking lawyer, having served in top roles at the Federal Reserve for former Chairmen Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan. Mr. Jiampietro brought market experience to the FDIC, having served as managing director of the financial institutions group at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. before joining the government.

Both posts — particularly the general counsel slot — will likely be very busy ones in the next several years. FDIC officials will be responsible for writing multiple new rules to implement the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul law. The law gave the agency new powers to liquidate large, failing financial companies, a process that will likely be extremely complex. The FDIC also has a bigger role on a counsel of regulators tasked with monitoring risks to the economy, and more power to scrutinize the financial condition of large banks.

The FDIC has seen some turnover in its general counsel office in recent years. Mr. Bradfield replaced Sara Kelsey, who left the agency Oct. 31, 2008 after serving in the role for less than two years.
