Private health insurers, as helpful as some may be in some cases since most have no option but to patronize those businesses, deserve zero credibility or trust.
As noted in an article at Op Ed News, private insurers will pull out the stops to derail Vermont's move to Single Payer It is time for Single Payer activists to pull out some stops as well.

Though PNHP (Physicians for a National Health Program) twice exposed for-profit insurers for their multi-billion dollar investments in cigarette manufacturing, and then for fast "food" investments, virtually the entire Single Payer community let those scandals alone. Could it be that some of the “universal care” and “health care for all” groups are not exactly pro-single-payer and anti-big-insurance? To ignore those scandals is unacceptably kind to the primary opponents of a public-funded and public-administered (i.e. Government-run...people-run) health system. It's a big thing. Silence here lets the insurers retain undeserved credibility, it prolongs the battle, and it may even let the insurers win. (If some of those IN government have gone AWOL and work not for their constituents---their employers---but for private interests, that’s a different story.)
The PNHP Reports:

Fast “food”: http://www.pnhp.org/news/2010/april/health-life-insurers-hold-188-billion-in-fast-food-stocks-ajph-article
And here's the only two SEC filings I can find (so far) that show insurer investments in not just cigarette manufacturing but the top health damaging and environmentally destructive industries on Wall Street…some being military contractors, big oil, pesticides (incl. tobacco pesticides), coal, plastics, nukes, natural gas fracking, genetically modified crops, assorted dioxin-creating chlorine industries…and more.

Here is an Op Ed News piece from awhile ago with a litany of reasons why both non-profit and for-profit insurers must be nowhere near our public health system. Reason Number One may be....Private insurers are adversaries---with motive and corporate duty to their own investors to provide as minimal service as possible at the highest cost possible, and to ignore or downplay dangers caused by their investment properties.
