Friday, November 5th, 7 p.m. - A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN
Part comedy, part drama, part science fiction... an edgy satirical take on anti-immigrant attitudes and policies
A Day Without a Mexican
Written and directed by Sergio Arau, 2004, 100 mins., rated R for language and brief sexuality. English and Spanish with English sub-titles
One day California wakes up, as a thick fog surrounds its borders, and not a single Latino is left in the state. They have all inexplicably disappeared - chaos, tragedy, and comedy quickly ensue.
Cars are abandoned in the street, food is left cooking on the stove. We meet the wife of a musician who's gone, a state Senator whose maid doesn't show up for work, and a farm owner whose produce is ripe and unpicked. The state and its economy grind to a halt.
The film takes a satirical look at the range of effects on the (non-Latino, mostly White) Californians who remain after the disappearance of all the Mexicans. The film does not dwell on how the Mexicans disappeared or where they went, but rather what happens to California without them.
