Thursday June 18th 7:00PM Harm Reduction in Philly With Project Safe @ Wooden Shoe Books 508 s. 5th Street Philadelphia PA 19147 www.woodenshoebooks.com sabot@woodenshoebooks.com
Project SAFE, a harm reduction program for sex workers in Philadelphia, will lead an interactive discussion that will address the following topics regarding the street-based sex industry of Philadelphia:
--The needs of sex workers and drug users
--Harm Reduction as social justice/anti-oppression work
--Criminalization of drug users and sex workers in Philly
--Intersections of oppression that disenfranchise communities in Philadelphia based on gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexuality and ability.
Project SAFE, a harm reduction organization, was created in 2004 to promote social justice and human rights among woman-identified folks working in the street-based sex industry in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. We believe that everyone, including people who do sex work or use drugs, has the right to good health and well-being; we enact this belief by supporting and engaging our program participants’ competence to take care of themselves, their loved ones, and their communities. We work to reduce harms associated with sex work and drug use which include violence, sexual assault, stigma, isolation, poverty, disenfranchisement, incarceration, and sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and viral hepatitis. This work is currently sustained by a group of about 20 volunteers and two part-time staff members.
Project SAFE operates four programs: a Bad Date Alert, a Street Outreach Program, a Supply Delivery Program, and a Referral Service. Through these programs, we collect and distribute bad date reports, risk reduction information and supplies; and promote community building, health and safety among program participants. Project SAFE also helps connect program participants to local resources that can support their self-efficacy and empowerment.
