Evening in Solidarity with Haiti

Thursday, August 5, 2010 --- 7PM

Film plus Haitian activist Frantz Latour

Six months after the terrible earthquake that devastated Haiti, killing 300,000 people and destroying the weak ...infrastructure, there is still a tremendous humanitarian crisis in this Caribbean country.

In spite of all the news media coverage of the United Nations Interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission, co-chaired by Bill Clinton, only 2% of the $10 billion pledged by the international community has been received in this beleaguered island. An exception has been the countries of the ALBA, especially Cuba and Venezuela. Although not rich countries, they have provided much needed materials and services.

Premier in Philadelphia of the Documentary "Luciérnagas en la noche" / "Fireflies in the night"

The video is 20 minutes long, in Spanish with bits in Creole, all with English subtitles. Against a background of the desolated destruction and human suffering caused by the earthquake, the video shows various medical interventions by not only Cuban doctors but also by doctors who graduated at the Cuban Latin American Medical School: from Chile, Honduras, Uruguay and Haiti. This is true internationalism and fraternal help to a sister nation devastated by a natural disaster.

Discussion by Frantz Latour

Well known Haitian activist and Editor of Haiti Liberte, a weekly, progressive newspaper published in Brooklyn but distributed in the Haitian Diaspora as well as in Haiti.
