The Earth Day Fest & Flea Market Saturday, April 18th, 2009, in West Philly’s beautiful Clark Park is an all day free event featuring live music, speakers, food, workshops, and activities for children. It is a fundraising benefit for the African Village Survival Initiative (AVSI), which is creating independent African community-led collective gardens and economic survival programs that are the key to creating a sustainable future for all people.

This festival and flea market in the park, sponsored by the Uhuru Solidarity Movement and Uhuru Furniture, will bring together the entire community to further a future of sustainability through self-determination for African and all people, and participate in creating collective solutions both locally and for the people worldwide.

We understand that the crisis of our world, ravaged by war, suffering, starvation, division and environmental degradation is not due to a natural process but because of an unjust  economic system where people in the US and Europe -- less than 20% of the world’s population -- consume over 80% of the worlds resources. This is not sustainable.  This has to change and the Uhuru Movement-led AVSI programs are showing the way forward!

AVSI is creating African community-led collective survival programs as a response to the deep economic crisis that is hitting the African community especially hard. This includes organizing a network of collective gardens throughout urban and rural areas, developing green and sustainable energy and economic development programs such as a licensed community kitchen and a state of the art recording studio.

The program in Clark Park is from 10am-5pm, featuring live artists with positive messages of justice and freedom. Featured speakers include: Uhuru Movement International Organizer Diop Olugbala; Dr. Michelle Strongfields, leader of the health committee of the All African People’s Development and Empowerment Project. Local community activists will be speaking and leading free workshops on sustainability, yoga and exercise, African community development and social justice, organic gardening and permaculture. Entertainment includes the dynamic Brazilian bossanova group Os Humanos, African freedom songs, revolutionary poetry, African drummers, storytelling and much more. There will be special workshops and hands-on activities for children.

Earth Day Fest will kick off the 2009 season of the popular Uhuru Flea Market at Clark Park, which runs monthly from April to October. The market features vendors selling beautiful ethnic art, jewelry, crafts, books, clothing and more. The Food Trust Weekly Farmers’ Market offers fresh, local produce straight from the farmer. The market will also highlight green community businesses, local organizations’ information tables, and delicious healthy food.

Co-sponsor Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles is a green and sustainable nonprofit African-led economic development program . Everything is donated and 100% of the merchandise is recycled. Shoppers choose Uhuru Furniture for the low prices and new items daily and because the store is owned by the African People’s Education & Defense Fund (APEDF) which is building programs to address the grave disparities in education, health, and economic development faced by African people.

The list of Earth Day sponsors and endorsers is still growing and includes: Dhyana Yoga, Ethnics Furniture, Zipcar, Robin’s Books, The Food Trust, Larabar, 10th St. Hardware, Popped Festival, juju organics, Studio 34, Friends of Clark Park and Essene Natural Market. It is not too late for your business or organization to get on board with this crucial event!

The festival also still has opportunities for volunteers, vendors, info tables and presenters.
