Compromise on casinos could let other pressing problems not plunge things downhill

by

Thinking compromise on casinos could let other pressing problems not plunge things downhill.

Many have claimed who is district attorney is as important as who is mayor but not this year. Since no candidate seems to be connected to the casino debate.

Of course DA candidate Seth Williams’ expressed tolerance on civil disobedience could suddenly make a difference to an abusive casino protester who might otherwise get his head smashed in.

Also if the FOP succeeds in getting Municipal Judge, Judge Craig Washington voted out of office, the other judges might think twice before ever challenging a police officer,

For why this June 19 election may be critical see the following link,

We can’t let disappointment over politician’s casino stance make us ignore the other progressive choices they may suggest.  Why don’t we all just agree to have a casino at the airport and let rich people casino party on river boats,

Dreaming of compromise on casinos could save Philadelphia’s progressive moderate alliance in the June 19 election

Just dreaming of compromise on the casino issue might make people listen more to politicians who want casinos, and urge support of Seth Williams as well.  This would delay a date where conservatives nationally would get a change to try again after they have been poisoned by politicians who openly brag of doing wrong, claiming torture and secrecy keeps this nation safe.

Time to react to Dan McCaffery’s last minute TV smear of Seth Williams is very short.  Adding to the mix locally the FOP, the police union, wants a judge recalled, Judge Craig Washington for following the law.   Election details in the following links,

Seth Williams is being red-baited by McCaffery, despite the glowing memories back when his reputation was on being amazingly thorough and carefully assistant prosecutor, rather than being  accused of tolerance toward criminals.  A comment from Lynne Abraham years ago when she was in an election against him is part of one of McCaffery’s TV ads.

Somehow not part of the election debate is Seth’s tolerant comments on civil disobedience.  But it could make a big difference if an insulting casino protester gets their head bashed in.

Now for the dream that could suddenly make us get along.

River boat gambling cruises, the city earning money from rich people who could afford a $100 prepaid voucher for food and future restaurant expense.  Instead of poor gambling addicts and their relatives crowding up local social service agencies.  And also a casino at the airport, with a $20 entertainment voucher that could be used for future restaurant use elsewhere in Philadelphia, to get on the gaming floor.

This would be much better than flush from casino cash revelers urinating on Liberty Bell Mall, and yelling ride en cowboy while taking a horse draw carriage ride around the mall, and destitute gamblers making their neighbors miserable.

Originally Governor Rendell begged the casinos to set up shop at the airport, but they wanted to mess up the neighborhoods instead.  When they got Chester to agree to a Casino, they snuck through a state law forbidding a casino 10 miles from Chester, which stopped a casino at the old Navel Yard as well as at the airport.  If local casino supporters and opponents united to criticize the Chester casino law, the state legislator might listen.

Now for the future danger nationally.  Even if Cheney’s bragging about doing wrong forces a trial, one juror might agree that torturers save this country from attack, and in jail his supporters would support him for years like they did with General Douglas MacArthur who defied Truman during the Korean War.

Preserving progressive politics locally is the best way to help preserve it nationally.  What happens in the immediate future in Philly may make a difference.
