I haven't been in Philadelphia that long but long enough to see how harsh and divided people are. I think it's both the economy and the attitudes that make it unpleasant and created the beast that is Philadelphia.
I've never seen such blatant racism and self-induced segregation, and I've lived and visited some places that are more well-known for racial conflict. Philadelphia takes the cake! You can see and feel the enslavement of the mind here, as well as the hypocrisy. I don't think it's worth it to stay, unless you grew up here and already have a sense of community. It's otherwise painful to hit brick walls. Thanks for your article. It encourages me to stick to my nature.
