Submitted by Rich Gardner on Sun, 03/15/2009 - 2:22pmhad anything significant to say about Palestine/Hamas, it was during the late December, early January war between Israel and the residents of the Gaza Strip. Hamas was of course part of that population, but Gaza is such a densely populated area, even had Israel desired to do battle just with Hamas, it really wasn't possible. So we never considered it a war just between Israel and Hamas.
We understood that Israel was reacting to the constant launching of small rockets from the strip. The damage done to Gaza was that 5,000 homes, 16 government buildings, and 20 mosques were destroyed. 25,000 homes were damaged. There was then and remains now an extremely tight blockade around Gaza, making it difficult for residents to obtain adequate food and medical supplies.
The struggle is simply not a straightforward, black and white, good guys vs bad guys kind of struggle. Neither Israel nor Hamas come across as unsullied heroes.
