GI Rights Counselor Training Philadelphia Friends Center 1515 Cherry Street June 14th, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm The Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors (CCCO) Philadelphia office is host to the GI Rights Hotline, a counseling project designed to support soldiers who are seeking a discharge or how to advocate for their rights within the military. This service helps individual soldiers and their family members navigate the often frustrating maze of military policies and plays an important role in the larger anti-war movement by providing support and knowledge to those who choose to resist war or participation in the military. CCCO is looking for new people to join the current team of counselors. We are holding an introductory training for people who are interested in doing this kind of counseling. You will learn the basic information we use to respond to our callers and find out more about what it means to do GI Rights Hotline counseling. This is a great opportunity for people who enjoy working with GI’s and veterans, truth-in-recruiting activists, or anyone looking to contribute their time and skills to the anti-war movement. We are also looking for people who have an interest or bring relevant experience to supporting callers who are dealing with racism, homophobia, sexual harassment or assault in the military. This training is open to anyone who thinks they may want to get involved, ideally we would like to train counselors who are willing to commit to a weekly 2-3 hour shift on the hotline. For those willing to make a commitment we will provide follow-up training and support. If you are interested in volunteering for school credit, we would be happy to help arrange that. If you are interested, please RSVP to Nico Amador at nico@objector.org. Please provide your full name, phone number and email address. Women, people of color, members of the LGBT community, and working class people are encouraged to join us.
