The Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) has released its report showing last year tied with 1998 as the second warmest year just behind 2005.

This is in spite of the fact that "solar irradiance is at a minimum and the equatorial Pacific Ocean is in the cool phase of its natural El Nino - La Nina cycle".

What that means is that last year would have broken the record quite remarkably under normal conditions.
