Akbayan Party today called on the Association of General and Flag Officers (AGFO) to repudiate retired major general Jovito Palparan and declare him an enemy of the Filipino soldiers and the military institution.
The political party issued the statement in response to AGFO’s accusation of “trial by publicity” against Palparan. Akbayan called the retired officers’ defence of Palparan as “regrettable."
“Instead of protecting Palparan, former officers of the Armed Forces should assist the government and the people to catch Palparan”, Akbayan Spokesperson Risa Hontiveros said.
“Because of his acts, Palparan soiled the institution of the Armed Forces and violated his duties to protect the people”, according to Hontiveros.
Hontiveros also called on Palparan to stop hiding and face the charges against him in court since his patron can no longer give him protection.
Since October 7, 2001 our men and women in uniform have been at war fighting on our behalf. Though there have been draw downs and reductions in troop levels they have still been fighting, taking punishment and acting as emissaries with the honor one would expect of the best our nation has to offer. They have not complained nor asked for much if anything. They have been dutiful and unquestioning in their devotion to our nation.

After World War II our nation wrapped itself up in a race with communist Russia and to a lesser extent China. We wanted to make sure we were always safe from the threat of the spread of communism. The nuclear arms race and military build ups of both the US and communist Russia cam to characterize who we were as a nation within a global context. We went from concentrating on being focused on the US and domestic issues first to defining ourselves by our global footprint.
We were left with a policy of containment and deterrent regarding communist Russian influence and an ever present sense of imminent threat among the American populace. There was always the belief Russia would or could invade at any moment and that we had to constantly be on the lookout for communist spies. Additionally there was the underlying nervousness caused by the constant threat of nuclear annihilation. It almost seems stupid now, but it was woven into almost everything from movies to every other corner of popular culture.

The Philippine Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said it did not clear the military in the human rights case of Filipino-American activist Melissa Roxas as accused by several militant organizations.
CHR chairperson Loretta Rosales said their Resolution (IV) No. A2010-130 did not necessarily mean the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) no longer had a hand in the supposed abduction and torture of Roxas in La Paz, Tarlac on May 19, 2009.
Rosales said their investigation had simply found no sufficient evidence to prove that military agents were behind the incident, and that the CHR investigating team found no proof that the incident happened in a government facility.
"It bears clarifying that... neither did the Commission on Human Rights 'practically clear' the AFP nor did it 'tag' the New People's Army (NPA) as responsible for the violation Melissa Roxas' human rights," Rosales said in a statement.

THE FUNDAMENTAL role and character of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has been brought into question by the latest revelations of the colossal scale of corruption, nay, plunder of state and people’s resources by the general command of the AFP.
Lt. Col. George Rabusa, the former Philippine military budget officer, has revealed a fraction of this plunder, as well as one of the mechanisms by which it takes place: the payola (slush) fund, known as the provisions for command-directed activities (PCDA), which has a fund of around half-a-billion pesos yearly. Through this PCDA fund, General Angelo Reyes helped himself to 50 million pesos when he retired in March 2001, after just 20 months in office.

AKBAYAN PARTYLIST | 02.07.2011
On Monday, members of Akbayan (Citizens Action Party) will conduct a creative action in Philcoa, Quezon City to support former Commission on Audit (COA) Auditor Heidi Mendoza and former military budget officer George Rabusa. The group will also condemn the prevalent corruption inside the Armed forces of the Philippines (AFP) which it said involved "GMA generals."
Dubbed as the “blow a whistle for the brave whistleblowers”, truth advocates will bring “giant whistles”, noise gadgets and colorful posters. They will also give away whistles to passersby and motorists to symbolize the people’s support to Mendoza and Rabusa and to remind the public that the search for truth, justice and accountability is not yet over.

The January 12 earthquake in Haiti that devastated the capital city, leaving well over 100,000 dead and a million homeless, was one of the worst geological calamities of modern times. The earthquake was a natural disaster, but the horrendous death toll and monumental destruction were caused by capitalism and imperialism. Now the human suffering has been enormously compounded by to the militarization of the relief effort and reoccupation of Haiti by the United States. More than a dozen flights by aid groups, carrying rescue squads, tons of medical supplies and entire field hospitals, were refused permission to land at the Port-au-Prince airport by U.S. military air controllers who are now in charge. Food was already stocked in warehouses, but agencies refused to distribute it for fear of "riots." The media blitz is a propaganda war to embellish the image of U.S. imperialism. This phony humanitarianism are being used to disguise a new U.S. occupation of Haiti. We demand an end to the imperialist occupation, U.S./U.N. forces get out of Haiti and stop blocking entry of Haitian refugees.

On December 1, President Barack Obama officially announced a massive escalation of the U.S. war on Afghanistan, tripling the number of American military personnel there since Obama took office. This move marks a decision by Washington to continue the colonial occupation of Afghanistan indefinitely, and with it the bloody slaughter of the Afghan people. Obama’s claim that he would “begin the transfer” of U.S. forces by mid-2011 was just sucker bait for gullible liberals. “Afghanistan Is Now Obama’s War,” proclaimed the media from New York to London to Mumbai. But Afghanistan has been the Democrats’ war since the moment it was launched, in September 2001, and together with the war on Iraq, it is a bipartisan imperialist war. No one in Washington thinks the Afghan puppet army will be able to handle the Taliban. The actual U.S. strategy is not to defeat the Taliban but to weaken it enough so that elements of the Islamists can be brought into a political deal. It is striking that in the United States, a majority of the population is turning against the war even though there hasn’t been a major national antiwar march in more than two years – ever since the start of the last presidential election campaign. At protests following Obama’s announcement of more troops to Afghanistan, organizers carefully avoided any signs mentioning the president by name. Our Internationalist contingent, in contrast, carried signs including, “Hey Obama, How Many Kids Did You Kill Today? Defeat Imperialist Slaughter in Afghanistan, Iraq.”
