AS THE NATION remembers today the declaration of Martial Law and the imposition of the Marcos fascist dictatorship 40 years ago — we recall not only the crimes and abuses, but the valiant struggles of our people to end the tyrannical regime.
Today is a day of remembering, so that we will not forget this dark chapter in our nation’s history and will not allow it to happen again.
Today is also a day of reckoning, as we continue to pursue justice and redress for countless victims of Martial Law abuses, including crimes and legacies that continue to hound and harm our nation and people.

Critics Separate Rhetoric from Reality in Obama's "Hope and Change" Foreign Policy
Interview with John Feffer, co-director of Foreign Policy in Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies, conducted by Scott Harris
Sen. Barack Obama campaigned for the presidency in 2008, as the “hope and change” candidate on domestic as well as foreign policy issues. After years of growing disenchantment and opposition to President George W. Bush’s bellicose and militaristic policies abroad – including the invasion of Iraq based on false allegations – many Americans were ready for our government to take a new approach in dealing with the rest of the world.

Residents of communities near mountaintop removal coal-mining operations in southern Appalachia suffer higher levels of many kinds of health problems than those living further away from such sites. Mountaintop removal is a mining method where millions of tons of dynamite are used to blast the tops off mountains in order to extract the coal seams beneath, dislodging rocks and earth which are dumped into the valleys below. Thus far, these operations have destroyed 500 mountain ridges and buried 2,000 miles of fresh water streams.

Mountain Top Removal Coal Mining Divides Communities Over Jobs and the Environment

Tensions are rising in the coal fields of southern Appalachia, as more militant – though nonviolent – protests are being staged to end mountaintop removal coal mining, and the demand for coal and its availability in the region is declining. In West Virginia, even some pro-coal officials estimate that the coal industry will play out in the state over the next 20 years, although vast amounts will remain accessible in the American West for much longer.

Former EPA Adviser Comments on Recurring Conflict Between Science and Politics
Interview with Paul Anastas, former EPA science adviser, conducted by Melinda Tuhus
In 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency promulgated stricter limits on ground-level ozone pollution. Top Environmental Protection Agency officials also expected regulations to protect public health to be enacted, preventing thousands of heart attacks, the spread of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. But, responding to industry pressure, President Obama decided in September of 2011 not to authorize the regulations, blindsiding EPA administrator Lisa Jackson and leading some to speculate that she would resign in protest. But she didn't.
