This year marks the 40th anniversary of the disclosure of COINTELPRO (Counter Intelligence Program) following the March 1971 break-in of the FBI office in Media, PA. Files removed from the office revealed a widespread program of surveillance, intimidation, and harassment of anti-war and radical social change activists. Today we are witnessing a similar assault by the FBI on activists and members of the Muslim community.
Join us for a panel discussion featuring:
David Kairys, Temple law professor and civil rights attorney
Luis Sanabria, National Boricua Human Rights Network
Stephan Salisbury, Philadelphia Inquirer reporter and author of Mohamed's Ghosts
Mary Catherine Roper, Senior Staff Attorney, ACLU of Pennsylvania

Citizen activist groups across Pennsylvania have been tracked by the PA Department of Homeland Security (PA-DHS) in ‘Terror Watch’ bulletins compiled by the Institute for Terrorism Research & Response (ITRR) in a no-bid $125,000 contract with PA-DHS. ITRR is an Israeli/U.S. private security firm that is part of the mega-billion post 9/11 growth in the private for-profit surveillance and spying industry in the U.S.

FBI raids on homes of anti-war activists... State office of homeland security tracking of activists… Police harassment and arrest of G-20 protestors...
Surveillance and harassment of activists is on the rise. Express your support of free speech and learn more about current threats to the right to dissent, including:
- The latest on the state anti-terrorism bulletins tracking activists
- The dangers of fusion centers, mechanisms created to share federal, state and local intelligence
- The use of the PATRIOT Act’s “material support” statute to go after activists
- The risks of privatizing intelligence gathering

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Iran fails to come up to the sorry free-speech standard set by the last US President. They should be ashamed of themselves.
I don't know if I'm exactly disappointed by the Iranian action against Facebook. In order to be disappointed, one has to expect good things. I guess I'm miffed that Iran has failed to come up even to the sorry free speech standards set by G. W. Bush, who had set up "Free Speech Zones" at Republican campaign events, usually allowing protesters to set up only in places that were at a good distance from where they could be seen or heard.

A group of six ordinary people in a Colorado courtroom saw through the McCarthyite political tactics of the University of Colorado officials and Colorado politicians who conducted a witch hunt against tenured professor and long-time Native American activist Ward Churchill, saying with remarkable clarity and sense that he never would have had his tenure revoked and been fired by the university had it not been for his unapologetic left-wing politics and writings.
Hooray for Juries: Ordinary Folks Once Again Defeat the System

It was an enormous victory for academic freedom and for the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech.

International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement | 03.25.2009
The International Executive Committee of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement (InPDUM) and its international membership body, denounces the Thursday, March 19 police attack on two of our organizers during the City Council meeting to feature Mayor Michael Nutter and his introduction of the highly controversial 2010 city budget.
During this process, InPDUM members were holding signs protesting Mayor Nutter’s current budget that spends more than $1 billion a year for police and prisons, which attack the black community. Subsequent to the police attack, InPDUM International Organizer Diop Olugbala (aka Wali Rahman) and InPDUM member Shabaka Mnombatha (aka Franklin Moses)—now known as the Philly City Hall 2—were brutally arrested and now have a list of charges, including aggravated assault on police!
